ABSTRACT

This report work is design for the following purposes:

  1. Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) exposes students to work methods and techniques in handling equipments and machineries that may not be available in the institution.
  2. It also enhances students contact for later job placement after graduation.
  3. It prepares students for work situation they are likely to meet after school.
  4. It also provide avenue for students in the Nigeria Tertiary Institution to acquire Industrial skills and experience in their course of study and finally,
  5. It provides students an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge.

CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

This writing is a technical report covering Industrial Training Programme known as “Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme”. SIWES)

This scheme is aimed at exposing students to machines and equipment, professional work methods and ways of safeguarding the work areas and workers in industries and other organization. The scheme is a tripartite programme involving the tertiary institution and the industry (employer of labour) and the industrial Training Fund (ITF).

The duration of the training is four months (Sixteen weeks) as approved by the industrial training fund in Nigeria. This training exposes students on how to approach the task of practice works regarding their respective field in order to become more practically oriented and appreciate more of their classroom theories.

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF SIWES

The industrial training fund (ITF) designed Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) in 1971 with respect to the yearnings of the Federal Ministry of Education. The scheme was basically initiated to supplement the theoretical learning of student from their various institutions with exposure to practical industrial activities in their various disciplines.

It is quite obvious that growth in technology is a worldwide phenomenon and Nigeria is not an exception. Therefore there is the need for improvement in the efficiency of the country’s workforce. To Bridge the gap between formal education and technical know-how, it because imperative to bring institutions of higher learning and employer’s in the industry closer through SIWES. Moreover, it is believed that SIWES will prepare Student and equipped them with the needed skills after graduation.

Hence, the federal government deemed it necessary to incorporate SIWES into the industrial training fund (ITF)

This is because the (ITF) is involved in training workers in commerce and industries as well as other establishments that needed training for manpower development. Therefore, since SIWES is also involved in developing students for manpower, in the industrial sector, the incorporation become necessary.

OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

The main objectives of SIWES are as follow:

  1. Prepare students for work situation they are likely to meet after school.
  2. Provide an avenue for students in the Nigerian Tertiary institution to acquire industrial skills and experience in their course of study.
  3. Provide students an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work situation, thereby bridging he gap between light education and actual practice.
  4. To expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipments, and machinery that may-not be available in the polytechnic/institution.
  5. Enlist and strengthen employer’s involvement in the entire educational process of preparing Polytechnic graduates employment in industries.
  6. Make transition from the Polytechnic to the world of work easier and thus enhance students contact for later job placement after graduation.
