CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION OF SIWES
The Siwes is a plan or supervise training intervention based on stated specific learning and carrier objectives and its cheers towards the occupational competency of the participant. It is a skill training programme which form part of the approved academic standards in the various programmes for all students of tertiary institutions of Nigeria; to expose the student and prepare them for industrial work experience.
Siwes is genetic, covering across about 60 universities programme in the country, 40 polytechnics and 10 colleges of education programmes, Siwes as not specific to any course of study.
1.1 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF SIWES
In the recognition of short coming and lack of relevant production skill in graduating student, ITF (industrial training fund) establish the Siwes programme in 1973. The programme was designs to expose students to industrial environment. It was also aimed at exposing students in machines and equipment profession and work methods and ways in industries and other organization.
The Stakeholders in support of the programme are Federal government, Federal ministry commerce and industry (FMC), Industrial training fund (ITF), Supervising (regulatory agencies i.e National board for technical education (NBTE) which are the polytechnics and monotechnics) National commission for colleges of education (NCCE) and National University commission (NUC).Β
1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES
1. It prepare students for industrial work situation that they likely to face after graduation
2. It provides an avenue for students to acquire industrial skills and experience during their course of study.
3. It makes the transition from school to the world of work easier and enhances student contact for later job placement.
4. It exposes students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery. That they may not be available in various institutions.
5. It provides students with opportunities to apply educational knowledge in real work situation, thereby bringing the gap between the theory and practical
