ABSTRACT
The study examines the role of motivation on the job performance of office professionals. The study was a survey study with four organizations in Kaduna metropolis. The theoretical basis for the study was obtained through review of related literature. The population of the study is 200 and the whole population was used.
The instrument used for the collection of data was questionnaire 200 copies of questionnaires were administered to the respondents and only 182 copies were returned. For the analysis, 4 research questions were formulated to generate answers. Based on the data analyzed on the topic under study, the researchers concluded that there is great need for proper motivational packages to be put in place in every organization as the performance of most office professionals depends largely on how they are been motivated.
The study also concluded that it is important for office managers to know those things that motivates each of its workers to work effectively and efficiently and be able to use those things to motivate them to get the best out of them. Hence, the researcher recommended that organizations should ensure that motivational packages are provided for all their office professionals at all level so as to encourage commitment and dedication to work.

Also, that office managers should endeavour to take note of those things that motivates each office professionals such as allowance, salary, promotions, office machines and equipment etc. so as to use it in boosting his/her moral, it was also recommended that management of organizations should take note of each of their staff so as to know when such staff is no longer satisfied with his or her job. And management of an organization should improve on creating conducive environment for its office professionals.

1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The role of motivation on the job performance of office professionals can not be over emphasized. In Nigeria today, lack of proper managerial knowledge, economic depression and high rate of unemployment have make most worker subjected to deplorable working conditions, which of course are the catalyst of low performance. (Nwachukwu 2009).
It is not easy to motivate an individual, for the success of any organization motivational effort depends on the extent of which the motivator meets the needs of the individual (office professional) for whom it is intended. Motivation is an internal psychological process whose presence or absence is intended from observed performance.
One of the major problems confronting management today is that of motivating to perform assigned task to meet or surpasses predetermined standard. Motivation is that energizing forces that induces or compels and maintains behavior.
Office Managers in most of the organizations are aware of the situation in the labour market, and as such want to capitalize on this fact to subject office professionals to deplorable working condition. It is when one is satisfied both physically and psychologically that such a person can perform his best. Therefore intimidating office professionals or threatening to sack can only worsen the situation but cannot solve it. Job satisfaction presupposes going to work and getting believed of work done.
Even with the provision of high technological services by electronic devices, some amount of human effort is required to service and monitor the equipment used in the process of delivering the service. Therefore, organizations still need to recruit and retain some level of qualified and self motivated staff in order to be competitive in the current globalised and turbulent economy.
Whoever may be guilty, the bottom line is satisfying the objective of the organization, which of course is to make enough profit to keep the organization moving. (Avina, 2011).
To meet the above objective there is need for both the management and office professionals to reach a consensus, the management meeting the desires of their employees and in turn the employees putting in their best in terms of performance. The workers need security of all types physical, psychological and economic are important for effective and efficient performance. Security can serve as an incentive to some individual to remains with the organization and to put in maximum effort in performance.
Many managements of organizations believe that the key to improve staff performance and productivity in any area is motivation rather than ability. Bateman and Snell (2013) contended that motivation is the force that energizes, direct and sustains a persons effort towards the achievement of a goal. A highly motivated person will work hard towards the achievement of organizational goal, given the ability and adequate understanding of the job.
Therefore, the challenge for today’s management is to administer motivational programmes which will encourage employees (office professionals) to improve their work performance and productivity. To this end, modern day managers of companies are therefore adopting various kind of motivational packages not only to retain employees but also help them to achieve competitive advantage in the market.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Some organization tends to employ more office professionals in order to meet the set goal of their organization and to satisfy the primary demand of the organization. However, despites all these effort, there could still be inefficient that is; performance could be still below expectation. This situation which have a negative effect on the entire organization at large, call for great concern and action in order to check and make proper correction to the problem.
It has been noted that office professionals often complain about their wages and salary administration, poor working condition, welfare, effective supervision, provision of adequate machinery and materials at work place, provision of proper appliance and their maintenances etc. the above complaints are indications that things are not going smoothly with the them.
On the other hand, management always ask why the office professionals are no longer productive or low level of productivity in the organization which is a cause of alarm in every organization.
When an office professional is confronted with a problem of job satisfaction in his work situation, his usual reaction will be to adopt a problem solving behavior which may take the form variability in thought, or action. If the variability in action and thought does not appear to be the solution to problem, he/she can abandon the problem and settle for less.
As a result, motivating the office professionals to find out what could be responsible for their performance becomes inevitable. It is these problems and many others that prompted the researcher to go into this study with the hope of providing possible solutions and recommendations that will help by the end of these write up.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of the study is to find out the role of motivation on the job performance of office professionals in some selected organizations in Kaduna metropolis. While the specific objectives includes:
1. To identify the role of motivation on the performance of office professionals
2. To examine what motivate office professionals to work efficiently and effectively.
3. To assess the various motivational packages for the office professionals.
4. To determine the impact of motivation on the job performance of office professionals.

1.5 Significance of the Study
In view of the immense role motivation plays on the job performance of office professionals, it is believed that this work will be significant to organizations, future researchers and office managers.
Organizations would be able to know the role motivation plays in influencing the performance of their workers.
Future Researchers it is believed that the work will be of help to future researchers and students of Office Technology and Management who have a related topic to research on.
Office Managers: They are expected to benefit because if the findings of this study are implemented, they will know what motivate office professionals to work effectively.
Office Professionals: This study will also help office professionals to see all the motivational packages laid down by their organizations so as to motivate them.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The research work is aimed at examining the role motivation plays on the job performance of office professionals in selected organizations in Kaduna Metropolis. Therefore, the scope of the study shall be narrowed down to four organizations namely: Mobile Telecommunication of Network (MTN) Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Plc (PAN), Globacom Nigeria Limited (GLO) and National Commission for Nomadic Education, Kaduna (NCNE).
1.7 Limitations
It is necessary to mention some of the limitation of this research work. The chief limitation is the difficulty in obtaining relevant information. The polytechnic library has related books on the subject of the study.
The method at collected data created problem, since the researchers has to interviewing the workers as a result of their tight working schedule. Subsequent to this problem is the combination of academic work with this research work.
Not withstanding, in the highlighted limitation above, it is hoped that this research will be useful to the organization studied and other similar organization that may want to achieve high performance through motivation of the employees.
