CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

According to Steven (2007) “Human Resource Management is the basis of all management activities. This basis is getting the people to make things happen in a productive way so that the business whether private or public, prospers and the people thrive.

Human resource management therefore is a key ingredient affecting organization competitiveness and it ability to fulfill its mission, statement and goal. The effectiveness and efficiency of an organization in promoting a product or service that satisfies customers needs, is critical if the organization is to succeed and survive.

That product or service is provided in part or entirely by people. Employees are not only among the most important resources an organization has; they also are among the most expensive and to a large extent, the most problematic.

It is against this background that the study of Human Resource become so strategic to modern management Effective utilization of people in an organization can provide a competitive advantage.

Business organizations are diverse. They have overall organization mission and goals to achieve within financial constraints.

To accomplish their mission and objectives, these organizations need to have their human resources managed, no matter how some of the resourceful human may resent certain aspects of the management.

1.2    Statement of the Problem

In the past human resource were not given attention they deserved in terms of management. They were treated with less importance than other resources in the organization. Resource such as materials, finance were given more attention than human resource that are responsible for the coordination of these resources for an organization to achieve its objectives.

The neglect of human resource has resulted in the low morale of employees and also resulted to problem of low productivity and increasing organizational conflict.

It is against this background that the researcher developed interest in studying how effective human resource development can bring about increase employee productivity, commitment and encourage industrial harmony in Nigeria industries.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

For the purpose of this research work, the major objective of this research is to examine the role of human resource management in promoting industrial harmony in an organization. Other sub objectives are as follows:

To examine the role of human resource management as it  relates to employees productivity improvement.

To discuss the ways of promoting industrial harmony in an

To outline the various way by which the relationship between  the employers and employees could be enhanced.

1.4 Research Hypothesis

Hypothesis can be seen as a skeletal fact of belief assumed to  be true. It is a tentative situation suggesting a solution to  some phenomenon.

For the purpose of this research work the following hypothesis  will be tested:

H₀: Effective human resource management practice does not promote industrial harmony in an organization.

H₁: Effective human resource management practice promotes industrial harmony in an organization.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The significance of the study is to help the organization maintain balance relationship between the employer and the employees in other to avoid conflict.
