giving loans to their members, making women economically strong etc. That different factors affect women’s participation in cooperatives. CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The Nigerian women, especially those who have been empowered to a certain degree, have proved to be more than mere bench-warming spectators even in the midst of the male-dominated professional congregation.

Three of such male dominated professions which include the Nigerian Medical Association, the Nigerian Bar Association and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria have been led in recent times by female presidents.

These feats according to an accomplished professional, Kuforiji (2010), testify to the resilience, determination and unyielding spirit of women, which points to two useful and challenging facts:  Firstly, those leadership traits are not genetically acquired and have nothing to do with gender.

Women can effectively participate in policy making and governance if given the empowerment and chance. They can hold their own in very difficult and stressful situations and can do as well, if not better than men.

Secondly, that man admires and respect women who wield power whether in economic or political spheres. This fact dismantles the confusing and misleading notion that successful women are abhorred and constitute a threat to the society and especially to their husbands and associates.

According to Kuforiji (op. cit), the foregoing implies that women need not be empowered in order for them to contribute more meaningfully to socio-economic, socio-political development.

Effect Of Bank Recapitalization On The Performance Of Small And Medium Enterprises In Nigeria

The needfor socio-economic advancement of women to contribute to the nation’s socio-economic development and their progressive prominence in the national scheme of affairs can hardly be achieved without their empowerment.

This is where the issue of cooperative venture comes into being. Since women in Nigeria play an important role in socio-economic development, how can they be empowered through cooperative activities?

It has been estimated that between 60 – 80% of cooperatives in the rural areas are domoinated by rural women (Osuji, 1999; Adeyeye, 2000; Obodoechi, 2002).

The role of women in national development is being focused widely in the recent times but several well-documented evidence (e.g. Haruna, 2000; Ijere, 2008) reveal that the women are not adequately empowered to contribute their quota in development efforts.

Given the low empowerment schemes for women and the avalanche of women’s cooperative both in rural and urban areas with rich social and economic-oriented programmes, can these women be empowered through cooperatives?

Can the women be encouraged to participate more in cooperative schemes?Integrating women into the mainstream of cooperative societies in Nigeria requires the concerted effort of all stakeholders in cooperatives, the government at all levels NGOs and development experts.

Consequently, how women can be empowered through their participation in cooperative activities is the premise of this study.

1.2 Statement of the problem

The participation of women in cooperative activities is a welcome development for the empowerment of the women race. The main aim of cooperative activities is economic development of the members.

Women play dominant roles in socio-economic development and thus the necessity for their participation in cooperative activities.

It is believed that womenwill be empowered and mobilized through their involvement in cooperatives. However, it is doubtful whether women are really being empowered because a large percentage of women who are members of one type of cooperative or the other appear to be helpless, economically weak,

socially unaware and have little or nothing to show from their participation in cooperative venture,Given the above unsatisfactory state of affairs, this study finds out how women can be effectively empowered so that they can help themselves,

their families and be able to contribute meaningfully to the development of their immediate community and the society at large. This is the concern of this study.

skills they have acquired could be utilized under the umbrella of cooperatives. This will help them to be more functional and relevant to themselves and their immediate community.

Cooperatives societies will utilize the result of this study and encourage women in their host communities to participate in cooperative ventures so that they can appreciate and exploit the advantages of cooperatives.

This will accelerate women’s economic development and the development of their immediate community.
