Amina Namadi Sambo Comprehensive Hospital Kaduna center was established in 23rd January 2008, the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme is a skilled training programme of various Tertiary Institutions for all Nigerians. The medical center is well equipped with equipment and materials that enable me to apply all the theoretical knowledge in real work situation, it exposes me on working techniques and method of handling equipment, devices and machineries. It also teaches me some safety laboratory precautions, and how to carryout tests in various sections, such as parasitology, hematology, chemical pathology.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
It was established in October 8th 1971 by the decree 4047 of the Nigeria law, the student industrial work experience is a skilled training program of various tertiary institutions for all Nigerians. It is also aimed at providing the student an opportunity to apply his/ her knowledge in real work situation. The Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) program began in 1973/1974 as student industrial training(SIT),
The program was established as a result of complains from industries about the practical deficiencies of the nation higher institution graduates. The scheme is therefore, the approval skills acquisitions forming a part of the minimum academic requirement, degree/higher diploma program in all Nigerian Institutions of higher learning. The industrial training fund (ITF) is a body that was establish by the federal government.
1.1Â Background of SIWES
The students’ industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) training program is an industrial training given to students in Nigerian tertiary institutions in order to introduce a student to practical knowledge of theories learned in their various institutions, and also It provides students with opportunity of learning the practical aspect of their course thereby seeking to bridge the gap between theory and practical knowledge.
SIWES program usually commenced at the third year of a four year course and also at the fourth year of a five years course of various field of pure and applied sciences, Engineering, social sciences.etc.SIWES program normally undertaken in a period of three to six months after first semester break.
1.2 Aim and Objectives
Some of the objectives of the student industrial work scheme include;
1.To provide an avenue for students in institutions of higher learning to acquire industrial skills and experiences in their course of study.
- To provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work and actual practice.
- To make the transition from school to the world of work easier and to enhance students contacts for later job placement.
- To prepare students for the work situation they are likely to meet after graduation.
- To expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipments and machinery that may not be available in their universities.
The main aim of the SIWES is to provide students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work situation thereby bridging the gap between the theory learnt in class and the practice.
1.3Â Historical Development of Amina Namadi Sambo Comprehensive Hospital Kaduna
The hospital was officially commissioned by his Excellency Arc. Muhammad Namadi Sambo (The Executive Governor of Kaduna State) on this day 23rd January 2008.

The organizational structures are as follows:-
- Laboratory department.
- Dental/Surgery department.
- Maternity unit.
- Administration and finance Unit
- Pharmaceutical department.
- Nursing Unit.
- Environmental Health Unit
- Emergency unit.
1.5 Laboratory Department
Pathology is the branch of medicine which deals scientific study of nature, causes, and origin of disease. Biochemically diseases result from alterations of either the structure or amount of certain biomolecules, or due to deficiencies of an enzyme. Microorganism such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi.etc could either cause mutation, nutritional imbalance, or hormonal deficiency or excess. These lead to severe alteration in the internal environment and physiology of cells, thus, diseases are simply abnormalities in structure and function of cells.
1.5.1Â Â Â Safety Laboratory Precautions
- Ensure you put on protective lab coat.
- Put on face mask where necessary.
- Ensure you put on practice gloves (hand gloves).
- Pipetting by mouth is not allowed.
- Do not eat, drink, smoke or apply cosmetics in the laboratory or testing work area.
- Keep the laboratory or testing site neat, clean and free of extra materials that are pertinent to the work.
g.Decontaminate all work surface area with 10% bleach immediately after any spill of potentially dangerous materials and at the end of each working day.
h.Wash your hands after handling any samples and before leaving the laboratory.
- laboratory doors should be kept closed when work is in progress.
- Discard all used syringes immediately after use.
k.Always cover broken skin or open wound with water tight dressing.
L.Immediately report all spills, accident or potential exposures to infectious materials to the laboratory supervisor.
1.5.2Â Â Â The Reception
The reception is the first in the laboratory unit in which the receptionists are there to do the back bone of the laboratory work. Here, collection, registration and labeling of samples are done. Before collection of sample, the test has to be coasted and duly paid and issued sample container to patients. Instructions were given to patients on how to pass out the sample into the container. Samples are collected for different test as filled by the doctor on request form.
1.5.3Â Â Â Sample Collections
Specimens such as urine and sputum are best collected soon after a patient wakes up when the organism have had the opportunity to multiply over several hours. Blood for culture is usually best collected when a patient temperature begins to rise. The time of collection for most other specimens will depends on the condition of the patient and the times agreed between the medical laboratory staff.
1.5.4Â Registration and labeling of samples
           Registration of samples is done in the reception where by the laboratory request form brought by a patient is registered accordingly in the general registration book, the laboratory request form indicates patients full name, age, sex, I.D.No and type(s) of test(s) to be conducted.
The general register consists of different columns, name, age, sex, Laboratory reference number, amount of the test and number of test to be conducted. Each sample brought to the laboratory was clearly labeled with the date, patients name and number, age, sex and date of collection, to avoid confusion.
1.5.5 Given out and dispatchment of result
Before giving a patient his/her result he/she has to present a small white receipt indicating his/her name and test on it. New results are dispatched into their respective folders before the patient comes for his/her result.
