ABSTRACT

This research work is on the Role of stores in the productivity of a manufacturing organization, a case study of 7up bottling company Plc, Kaduna plant. The researcher briefly explain some general problems facing stores functions in an organization. An introduction to the topic was made including the aim objectives of the study. In the second chapter, the researcher reviewed sum of the existing literatures by notable authors.

The third chapter deals with the research methodology, where the researcher uses questionnaire, physical observation and personal interview as the major means of gathering relevance information from the organization.

The researcher present and analyze the data collected after which hypothesis was proved. In the last chapter, the researcher summarizes what had been discussed in the previous chapters, draws conclusion and made some recommendations.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Store function is a very important aspect of an organization that has been relegated to the background despite the fact that stores management and function is not new in Nigeria and has been practiced by many organizations over the year.

As the organizations needs continue to grow with an increasing demand for various resources required to cope with the fast changing technologies. There it also the growing need for the effective resource management. If we accept that the objectives of management is the efficient utilization of human, financial and material resources of an organization, towards the attainment of the defined economic goods of the organization, then the need to manage the available resources at it’s disposal becomes necessary for the store to function.

The functions of stores management include the provision of efficient and effective storage and handling of goods to be reยญdistributed to the user departments, the procedure for the purchase and receipt of items locally purchased, the updating of records, the control of stores personnel, motivating toward objectives and management of the physical resources among others, so to say, the primary objective is to provide services to the operating functions and this must be fully appreciated.

One of the most important of the resources is the material resources, which is also known as stocks or stored. The competitive demand for stores by various organizations and the acute shortage of it, brought about the development of an efficient way of managing this important resource which is stores management. The store management functions have thus been involved in the efficient management of the physical, movement of materials and maximum utilization of stores and storage facilities of all kinds.

Moreover, the idea behind store management has been a controversial issue because of the fact that too many unclear facts have been connected with it, such as handling of stores by some un-trained, ill-equipped and unprofessional personnel.ย  Theย  operationย  of storesย  management was also based on the rule of thumb with great emphasis placed on correct quantity of receipt and issues.

Quantity inspection which is an inherent activity in stores management was not carried out in the organization it is pertinent to maintain that the role of buying is linked with both functions. As a result of this, no organization exist without much emphasis on the need for stores to be cared for.

one often ponders that if there had been an efficient stores function and management/ the problems of negligence which is as a result of additional cost involvement will not be experienced. For this reason, the researcher has taken this aspects of stores, management in order to delve into the nature on how the function is operated at 7up Bottling Company, Kaduna plant, in order to resolve the controversies because of the need for efficient, effective and economic stores functions and management become inevitable as modern organization changes in response to legislation, community pressure and technology.

1.2ย ย  STATEMENT OF THE GENERAL PROBLEMS

Organizations of whatever sort encounter problems in one way or the other. These problems vary from one organization to another depending on the type of business being carried out, the objectives and size of the organization in question determine the nature of problems. Materials represent and equivalent amount of cash. Pilferage, deterioration of materials and careless handling of stores lead to reduced profits or even losses.

Some store personnel are not properly trained, while majority acquire little knowledge from job rotation which call for the same skill. Consequently, the standard of performance is not all that high. A lot of money is spent by both private and public organizations on acquiring materials which are held in store houses and stock yards.

The bulk of these goods are usually stores for use either in connection with production or as operating activities. Hence a lot of money is being spent in acquiring adequate management of such materials from the time they are received, stored and maintained up to the time they are finally issued out to various departments authorized to use them.
