Other limitations arise from the uncooperative attitude of respondents as well as their non-challant attitude. This affected the validity of their response. As such in-coming students as well as individual who may wish to conduct a further research should take this into cognizance.

Historical Background of the Study

The history of the Nigerian Breweries Plc began in 1946 when the first indigenous brewing company, Nigeria Brewery Limited was incorporated in the country. Three years later, the first breweries plant was commissioned in Lagos. After this bold step by the United African Company (UAC) and Heineken of Holland, which was the technical partner, the infant industry experienced talking problems by trying to convince beer consumers to accept its product. Clearly, the problem arose as a result of stiff competition from imported products which commanded disputed preference.

The two decades were crucial for the survival of the industry. Bu by 1960, Nigeria gained political independence. With the independence came a new social awareness that gave birth to the new class. System consumers demand for beer and other product grew and generally, the locally produced beer brand gained the much needed acceptability.

A second brewing industry was established at Aba by the Nigeria Brewery limited, which was followed a few years later by the Guinness Stout limited and Golden Guinea Breweries Limited of Umuahia which commissioned similar breweries.

But demand for beer continued to grow the succeeding period between 1962 and 1970 again witnessed the great difficulties for the brewing industry. During this period, the country was pre occupied with the civil war.

The existence of war directed resources from industrial and economic activities to the prosecution of the war consequently, the growth of the industry got stagnated and with a lot of money from petroleum sa1e storing around, demand for beer again escalated.

The industry expended dramatically as a result of increased capital investment which generated handsome profit margin.

The bandwagon effect was tremendous as entrepreneurs began the invest establishment of new breweries. Infact, there are now over29 brewing companies incorporated in this country with over 3 plants in production 23 other companies at various stages development.

But even with the size, the industry is only capable of producing about 20 to 23 million hectoliters of beer per annum, which in comparison with the consumption per crystal of some Africa countries is still considerably low. Nevertheless, the size of the industry is this significantly related to the national economy.

In 1949, other breweries were subsequently commissioned by the company, including Aba brewery in 1957, Kaduna Brewery ii 1963 and Ibadan Brewery in 1982. In September 1993, the company acquired its fifth brewery in Enugu state sited at Ama ii Enugu, Ama brewery is the largest in Nigeria and one of the most modern worldwide. Operations at Enugu brewery were discontinued in 2004, while company acquired malting plant in Aba in 2008.

In October 2011, Nigerian Breweries acquired majority interest inSona Systems Associations Business Management Ltd (Son System) and life breweries limited from Heineken N.V. This followed Heineken’s acquisition of controlling interest in five breweries in Nigeria from Sona Group in January 2011.

Sona Systems two breweries in Ota and Kaduna and life breweries in Onitsha have now become part of Nigeria’s brewer Plc, together with the three brands, Goldberg Lager, Malta Gold and Life Continental larger.

Thus, from the humble beginning in 1946, Nigerian Breweries Plc now have eight operational breweries from which its high quality products are distributed to all parts of Nigeria in addition to the ultra modern malting plant in Aba and Kaduna.
