CHAPTER ONE
1.1 BACKGROUND OF SIWES
In the earlier stage of science and technology education in Nigeria, student were graduating from their respective institution without any technical knowledge or working experience. It was in this view that students undergoing science and technology related courses were mandated for student in different institution in the view of widening their horizons so as to enable them have technical knowledge for working experience before graduating from their various institutions.
The student Industrial Training Scheme (SIWES) was established by Industrial Training Fund in (ITF) 1973 to enable student of tertiary institution have basic technical knowledge of industrial works base on their courses of study before the completion of their program in their respective institutions.
The scheme was designed to expose student to industrial environment and enable them develop occupational competencies so that they can readily contribute their quota-to national economic and technological development after graduation.
The major background of students in SIWES was to expose them to the industrial environment and enable them develop quota-to national economic and technological.
1.2 GOAL AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES
The goals for establishing the SIWES as listed by the ITF include:
Providing an avenue for students in institutions of high learning to acquire industrial skills and experience in their courses of study.
Preparing students for the industrial work situation they are to meet after graduation.
Exposing students to work methods and techniques in handing equipment and machinery that may not be available in their institutions.
Making the transition from the academic institution to the world of work easier and enhancing studentβs contacts for later job placement.
Providing students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work situation thereby bridging the gap between theory and practiced.
Enlisting and strengthening employersβ involvement in the entre educational process and preparing students for employment in industry and commence.
In fact, the benefit of the programme to the employer from the objectives include among others, that he could through properly structured training programme train the student in a manner that could suit his requirements to that should the student return, on completion of his studies, to the company, less time and money would be expended on his normal industrial training. The reverse should be the case when he is not opportune to participate in the training programme.
