CHAPTER ONE
1.0 THE SIWES PROGRAM
The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) established the students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) in 1973 to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical skills preparatory for employment in industries by Nigerian graduates of tertiary institutions. The Scheme exposes students to industry-based skills necessary for a smooth transition, from the classroom to the world of work.
It affords students of tertiary institutions the opportunity of being familiarized and exposed to the needed experience in handling machinery and equipment that are usually not available in the educational institutions (ITF 1990).
SIWES is an avenue aimed at preparing, training and exposing students of various.
Institutions for industrial work situations they are likely to come across after graduation.
The SIWES scheme is funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria and is jointly coordinated by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the National University-Commission  (NUC).  This  scheme  is a tripartite program  involving students, universities and the industries only within a period of Some Months.
Participation in SIWES has become a necessary pre-condition for the award of Diploma and Degree certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions of higher learning in the country, in accordance with the education policy of government.
1.1 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES PROGRAM
The SIWES program came with the aims and objectives of:
Providing students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge into practical aspects in reality thereby bridging the gap between the theory and practical n sciences and related disciplines in tertiary institutions.
Exposing students to work methods and technique in handling equipment and machinery that may not be available in their various institutions.
Providing avenue for students in Nigerian Universities to acquire industrial skills and experience in their course of study.
Enhancing students contact for later job placements
