INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Subject Matter
Social work is a diverse and useful professional with a rich history that both reflects and energizes the society and social institutions it serves. Medical social work as a form of social services. Medical social work as a form of social services capture of the social work profession, while demonstrating at the same time how the Nigerian society has shaped the emerging services as a form of social work.
The impact of medical social workers as a form of social services dwells on the treatment of their clients. There are certain situations when the paramount role they play in the treatment of their clients. There are certain situations when the patients come to hospital with sickness that ate either directly or indirectly in consonance with social problems which need the attention of a medical social worker for an effective and successful treatment.
Such situations come to being in the case of a client with family problems such as maltreatment or diverse. Other instances are drug abuse or addiction among youths, and scenario when a lady or woman who gets married but hates sere simply because she was way back raped at a tender age, so the traumatic experience keeps on vibrating.
All these sort of problems can lead to mental illness and in order to provide a solution to them, the attention of the social worker is needed more than that of a medical doctor. It is against this backdrop that medical social work units are created in hospitals, and training as well as working facilities to conduct such services are mostly provided by the ministry of women affairs and social development.
Yet the question is that the public or society seems to be ignorant of their existence. Where they exist, there seems to be death of facilities and even offices in which to practice their profession.
As an indispensable arrow in the quiver medical social work reflects and deals with the contextual nature of every society. In Kaduna state for instance, communities are characterized by many ethnic groups, cultural backgrounds, life styles and social problems of high and low magnitude, and a large number of people out of this categorization are served by social workers when their attention is needed.
Medical social work appears to be the oldest of the social work professions. It was first practiced by Almoners in 1950 in Britain Here in Nigeria, medical social work first practice in Lagos and Ibadan teaching hospitals in the early 1960s.
But than just like other people who spore as an integral part of medical work, medical social workers were over shadowed or shown little efforts by some doctors in the hospitals which resulted to less regard and recognition of the social work profession.
With the prevalence of emotional and social illnesses in the society, people began to understand and appreciate the significance of medical social work, hence the institution with which the medical social workers works is being recognized and now the medical social workers carry out their work without any hindrance medical social work is agreed to be a unique and best approach towards dealing with based on the context of their health situation which could be triggered by psychological, physical or social factors.

1.2 Statements of the General Problem
The need for medical social workers in Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Unguwan Rimi Kaduna cannot be over emphasized in view of the government determination at both state and federal levels towards if not eliminating, reducing to the bearest minimum, preventable deaths and improving the health status of Nigerians.
The world they say is not a bed of roses as such; it can be emphatically said that it is a natural phenomenon to see people in the society with one problem or the other which are often born out of psychological, physical or social factors, Apart from these problems, statistics have shown that a larger proportion of patients troop in to Barau Dikko teaching hospital with their related problems such as chronic, acute or terminal illness such as cancer, AIDS etc these illness among others may be best handled and treated by medical social workers, hence they are needed in such instances more than the medical doctors, so in as much as there is need to ensure proper maintenance of mental and emotional well-being of the sick once in the hospital, the attention of medical social workers is of utmost importance as a result of the gigantic roles they play and this formed this basis for this research.
1.3 Research Questions of the Study
1. What are the impacts of medical social workers in Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital?
2. How effective are the roles of medical social workers in the hospital?
3. What is the relationship between medical social workers and medical practitioners in the hospital?
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The major aim and objectives of this study is to
1. Identify the impact of medical social workers as a form of social service in the hospital.
2. Specifically the study is to find out the roles of medical social workers in dealing with patients whose illness may be characterized by social factors like malnutrition, poverty, stress, unemployment, HIV/AIDs, Cancer, ulcer, torture, anxiety etc.
3. Identify an effective strategies that will be employed to facilitate the activities of medical social workers, out of which social case work is outstanding because it encompasses a whole lot of things like family counseling, HIV couple counseling, intending couple counseling and re – uniting couple counseling.
1.5 Significance of the Study
The importance of this research is to enable especially the patients to know the relevance of medical social work in hospitals in order to link them, so as to be able to fully benefit from the services and opportunities available there from. This research will serve as a guide in helping patients/client, up-coming students etc. in the field of social development especially for reference purpose in their various project works and endeavours.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study is limited to find out the impact of medical social workers as a form of social services and it is restricted to Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital in Unguwan Rimi Kaduna which is along Lafia Road.
1.7 Definition of Terminologies
Medical Social Work: Is defined as the application of social work principles and method in the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of cases of illness
Social Services: This is defined here as any service rendered by a trained social worker which is aimed at promoting the welfare of individuals and their families and some applies to groups and communities.
Hospital: Is defined here as an institute on that provides medical services or treatment and care for ill or injured people.
Social Worker: Is seen as any treatment person or individual who practices social work and mostly works in social welfare agencies such as hospitals, clinics, prisons, orphanages etc.
Sick Person: Is any person who is physically, mentally or socially ill and therefore he/she is deviated from normal functioning which has undesirable consequences because it causes personal discomfort or adversely affects the individuals health status.
