CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
For a proper source of health statistics, it is very necessary to note that type of data can be collected to satisfy some desired objective will be broadly based on the product of some other processes. These types of information on health from the fundamental set of statistics indicators or monitoring health statistics.
However, we talk of statistics data, we generally down or attention to published and unpublished sources. The published source are the data obtained from statistical abstracts, bulletins, research reports, enlarged, journal, daily newspaper, magazines etc. while the unpublished sources are the original data that are found in files, logbooks and various registration forms which can be used by some researchers as well as the government establishment for some specific objectives.
Health statistics can be supplied the record officer of a hospital, the state ministry of health, the health services management board and the state health office. The World Health Organization (WHO) statistical year book on epidemiologist and vital statistics do provide some detail information on health data.
In the case of this study, the data collected from the original sources, Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital Kaduna record office. The medical record officer has the task of collecting classifying, tabulating, compiling and analyzing data pertaining to the general aspect of health pattern in the hospital.
Though the conditions and background at which the data was collected is unknown, but investigations show that they are reliable. Meaningful conclusion can be drawn after proper analysis of the data.
1.0.1 NATURE OF HEALLTH STATISTICS
For a proper planning the government needs to have fundamental knowledge of the total number of people in the country the geographical distribution of this people in relation to rural and urban composition.
However, demographic data on health, planning is particular indispensible. Data on fertility, mortality or even the diseases control can be used in decision making and for the improvements of health conditions and its development in an area.
Any registration system should provide adequate statistics, which could form the basis for informed national decision.
There should be provision for a central or local agency which, among other things could gather analyze and disseminate basic vital (and health) statistics.
Some other areas which have some certain characteristics are also essential considering the fact that certain health problems are more pronounced in some areas.
Morbidity and mortality are influenced by the process of economics development (unemployed, inflations, bad housing etc) and the distribution of health services. Three are five main types of data that can be collected for planning and these are:-
- Population data:– information mainly on mortality and doctors, nurses etc
- Health service cost: – the cost of producing health to people when data are collected through the above ways proper planning can be carried out of health programme. This work is based on health problem information and which was recorded monthly.
iii. Health problems data:- information mainly on mobility and morbidity
- Health services resources:- Data on the services of medical personnel like their efficiency.
- Health services achievement:- effect of health services on people, towns, villages etc.
