INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Cooperatives societies are association of persons with a common felt need who unites, voluntary to tackle their need which may either be economic, social or cultural, through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.
The word Cooperative as applied to organization is taken from the generic term cooperative which implies assisting one another for the purpose of common achievement concerted efforts by scholars to give a meaning to the word cooperative as an institution or organization proves to be of the view that such people forming the organization do so from a common experience as a propeller.
Assessing The Roles Of Small Scale Business In Socio-economic Development of Nigeria
An Evaluation Of Financial Management In Relation To Decision Making In A Manufacturing Organization
Chukwu (2001) sees cooperative societies as institution with whose framework Cooperation or joint activities by people take place in a formulized, long-term, deliberate and to a great extent specific form in the social and especially economic shares of human endeavour.
I.L.O. in Ogbu (2007), defined cooperatives as an association of person who have joined together to achieve a common end.
According to Adeyeye et al in Okonkwo and Nwajinba (2005), a cooperative society is a business enterprises or organization owned and controlled by members (member patron) and they aim at rendering services for their mutual benefit of all members.
I.C.A. in OkorieAffia and Amahalu (2006), defines a cooperative society as an autonomous association of person unite voluntary to met their common, social and cultural need and aspiration through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprises.
Subject to the above definition, it can be said that cooperatives can be formed in different shares and facts of lives endeavour with the aim of salving a common problem arising from either social or economic activities. Cooperatives can be formed by farmers, traders, business people employees tourist etc.
These organization if rightly forms and managed in accordance with the general principle guiding their operation, as stipulated by the International mother-body. International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), have the potential of improving the living standard of the members.
Cooperative organization are formed by members as owners and managers as well as patron (customers) or the business, this has placed member at a higher responsibility to the survival of their own business. Ogbu (2007), ascertain that cooperative members have a dual role to play i.e. as owners/employers and as customer which makes the participation of members much more expected than in any other type of business enterprise.
This means that as members they are also employee either conventionally as implies in the content of cooperative, or pragmatically as a paid employee or hired manager in the case of management committee.
The responsibility of members varies to some extent as it ha to do with a cooperative type, for instance, all cooperative members are expected to participate in decision making, be faithful as patrons, while the patronage may differ in the cases of thrift and credit, consumer, multipurpose societies etc.
Cooperative form among workers of an organization may also take the form of thrift and credit, consumer, multipurpose societies etc, which also requires members to fulfill their responsibilities while management committee and employee on the other hand are expected to play their roles diligently. This is the essence of cooperation as roles are being played by the people together to achieve their goal.
However it has been discovered that most cooperative today does not perform up expectation probably because of the activities of members (worker’s) attitude toward their cooperative Business.
Chukwu (2010), identifies some of the attitude of members (workers) the cooperative as centrifugal. Passive, active and opposing which affect the society business positive or negatively, cooperatives in workers setting are also victims of this.
This research is therefore aimed at making finding as to the impact of workers attitude on the efficiency of cooperative Business, as it arise from motive for joining the cooperative, the impact of such disposition as well as the factors that influence such attitudes, using a worker’s cooperative society.
Statement of the Problem
Cooperative societies if properly formed and managed with members meeting their responsibilities, have the potential of improving the members socio-economic well being and boosting their productivity in business or at work place. This covers both the economic, social, cultural or political sector.
This explains to some extent why people join Cooperatives, for instance, Chukwu (2010) mention that people join cooperatives for economic motive, while other join for sociological or emotional motives as well as attitude pressure.
As a result of these underlying motives, the individual members healed sometimes knowingly or unknowingly assume a behaviour that as favourable or unfavourable to the development of their cooperative, such member motives and accompanying behaviour could determine their attitude towards their cooperative business.
For instance Amahalu (2006) agrees that the motive behind people joining cooperative could determined how they treat the cooperative society, while some member could facilitates the progress of their society. Other may not. This motive becomes instrumental to the position a assumes in the organization and is also consequential to the position of a cooperative business enterprise.
If the placement on the society is positive. It navigates to the general productivity and economic growth, for instance, if member save, pay their full shares as at when due, loans will be given to applicants (member) who if rightly applied for loan. Production will be enhanced. (Okonkwo &Nwajiuba (2005).
While it has been observed (Amahalu 2006; Chukwu 2010) that in any given Cooperative society, members could assume different behaviours base on their motive for joining the society. It has not yet been empirically determined what these behaviours specifically look like, that is the attitude, and the impact this attitude has on the efficiency of a cooperative business especially in a worker setting. What the factors that influence these behaviour or attitude of member towards their cooperative business enterprise especially in a worker cooperative.
This study is therefore aimed at Investigating into these areas and their impact on the development of cooperative as touching the efficacy and efficiency of a cooperative organization using KRPC multipurpose cooperative society Ltd, Kaduna and CABSICS Cooperative society as a worker society.
