INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Far back around 1960 to early 1990, the word “computer was seldom used by people in Nigeria because little did they know about it but today, Nigeria has become of age with the use of computer, most organizations or establishment use computer for their day to day activities.

The two main reasons that justify most organization in adding computer system as a component of a business is to relieve humans (office managers) of certain clerical burdens, efficacy and equally do something that could not be done without a computer. An example of the former is the task of posting daily transactions.

This position is further reinforced by Hicks (as cited in Aku 2012) who stated that today’s’ secretaries is now known as office managers because of the role played.

According to Hornby (2013) computer is an electronic device with stored information (programmes/softwares) that accept data as input, process it and give the result as output. Assembling of computer of is made in such a way that it receives command given to it without adding or subtracting. The mavelous performance of computer is enhanced on how well the user is able to manipulate the machine to work.

UNESCO (2011) defined computer as one of the electronic items that are used for handling information and communication. On their own, it can do nothing but with people (office managers) to give them instructions, they are powerful and useful tools.

UNESCO (2011) defined office manager as one whose duty is to coordinate and control the affairs of others in an organization.

Huston (2009) defined an office manager as a person who organize and supervise all of the administrative activities that facilitates smooth running of an office. He further explained that an office manager carries out a range of administrative and related task, depending on employing organization.

Aku (2000) also commented that an office manager who cannot utilize and control computer equipment is outdated and only fit for the museum, because office manager is one who has a good knowledge of sophisticated gadgets with master of office skill and is well versed in information management.

Hardly today, can any organization be it small or big undergoes its operation without a computer, for it increases efficiency of secretarial work and office manager considered it as a must to work with.

  • Statement of the Problem

The existence of computer and it application in organizational activities indicates that organizations are genuinely interested in the efficiency and effective running of their day to day transactions. This is due to the benefit that is attached to computer usage.

It is therefore, observed that some office managers have not acquired the necessary training for computer usage in an organization to meet up with the new challenges of present day technological advancement which has an effect on their job performance

It is also observed that many office managers are yet to realize the benefits of computer towards their performance and so do not acquire the training needed for computer usage.

Finally, it is observed that some organization does not know the benefit of computer in their workers performance and so do not acquire it for their organization and this affects their productivity.

It is in the light of the above mentioned problems that prompted the researchers to conduct this study with the aim of providing possible solutions to these problems by the end of this write up.

1.3     Purpose of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of computer on office manager’s job performance.

Also, the specific objectives include the following:

To examine the relevance/benefits of computer to office managers.

Find out the existing stocks of computer in their organization.

Find out if the office managers are well trained on how to use the computer.

Determine the factors that hinder the effective performance of office managers in the usage of computer.

1.4     Research Questions

In order to find out solutions to problems under study, the following research questions have been framed:

What are the benefits of computer to office managers?

Does the organization have enough computers that will serve all office managers?

Are the office managers well trained on how to use the computer?

What are the factors that hinder the effective performance of office managers in the use of a computer?

1.5     Significance of the Study

After the completion of this study, the following categories of people will benefit from the study:

Organizations: it is hoped that after the study, employers will realize the fact that computer is a vital tool for the attainment of organizational goals.

Office Managers: It is expected that after this study, office managers will be able to realize how important it is to have necessary training on computer usage.

Future Researchers: It is hoped that the findings of this study would serve as a useful resource material for future researchers.

1.6     Scope of the Study

The research work is aimed at examining the effect of computer on office managers job performance in selected organizations in Kaduna Metropolis. Therefore, the scope of the study shall be narrowed down to four organizations namely: Kaduna Electrical Distribution Company (KEDC) Nigerian Breweries Plc, Kaduna State Water Board and Eco Bank Plc.

1.7     Definition of Terms

The following terms will be used in this study.

Office Managers: An assistant to an executive possessing mastery of office skills and ability to assume responsibilities without a direct supervision.

Metropolis: This is the main city of a country or Region.

Computer: Is an electronic device which accepts data (input) process it and give the result as information (output).

Office: A room or building used for business or clerical work.

Organization: It is setup for either business or other activities aimed at earning profit.

Efficiency: Ability to produce quick satisfaction result in the organization with the use of employees.
