ABSTRACT

The essence of this research work is to examine how effective purchasing can contribute to the growth and profitability of an undertaking. It is necessary to disabuse the misconception in the minds of people who are ignorant about the subject matter.

An introduction was made which comprised the Background of the study, physical background of Hamdala Hotel Kaduna, statement of the problem, objective of the study, statement of the hypothesis, significance of the study, scope of the study, limitation of the study end definition of terms. In this direction, views of various authors and professionals on the subject matter were acknowledge, bringing out area of agreements and difference of the subject matter.

Descriptive research design was used to give the process of investigating a proper direction. The sample size for the study was twenty five out of (25) of the population of two hundred. Random, probability sampling method based on quota sampling was used in the selection of the respondents.

Questionnaires personal interview and personal observation are employed to collect the relevant data which led to the presentation, analysis and interpretation of such data and finally led to the proof of the hypothesis which were stated.

The outcome of the investigation show among other things that purchasing as a professional entity is contributing to the growth and profitability of Hamdala Hotel moreover, the researcher found out some inconsistency of the purchasing personnel to assist in areas of progressing for promote delivery.

Based on the above activities such as employment of more purchasing personnel’s proper vendor relating whose result should be strictly followed and the establishment of research team in the purchasing department to enhance more profit.

INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Purchasing is one of the basic functions common to all types of business enterprises. These functions are basic because not business can operate without them. By its very nature then purchasing is an integral part of business management. In most organization today, materials are considered as a corner- stone to successful operation. This means that materials procurement takes the largest share of financial budget in a pradictional period.

Materials today are the life blood of industries. These materials must be available at the proper time, in proper quantity, at the proper place and at the proper price, Lyson (2006).

Failure of any of the responsibilities concerning materials adds to company loss and decreased company’s profit. This shows how vital the contribution of purchasing function in a service industry can have on the bearing of the organization.

This project work is concern with industrial by and how they contribute to the managerial decision and to the profit of their firms. Industries in Nigeria depend greatly on the role of materials procurement to assist in effective production of goods and services therefore, in order to save cost and maximize profit effective purchasing, to be carried out.

Consequently, the research has undertaken to write on an appraisal of the contribution of purchasing function of management in a hospitality industry with reference to Hamdala Hotel in Kaduna as the case study.

However, purchasing activities can contribute to the growth that effectively such activities can be carried out are among other things will be discussed in the course of this research work.

1.2  STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

For a business to be successful, all the individual parts must be coordinated. It is a fact that many organizations depend on effective materials procurement for continue operation. Despites this, there are so many difficulties which are encountered.

First is the problem of non availability of materials which can be a big problem to any organization and in general, can set back smooth operation of materials for any undertaking.

Effective communication is another problem that may hinder the progress of the purchasing functions within an organization. Where there is no effective communication between the buyer and the supplier, it may alter the whole situation of the intended purpose. The communication between the departments within the establishment is also very important as this may aid the purchasing department in their duties. Where there is no co-operation among the department effective communication may be hindered.

The purchasing department is also faced with correlating their purchasing actions with sales forecast and production. They select suppler from whom purchases can be made on a continuous and mutual basis. For optimum results, they integrate the efforts of their department with those of the other department of the firm.

1.3  OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The major objectives of this study is to appraise and access the activities as well as the problems that affect purchasing function of the organization and provides possible strategies in the form of suggestions that will help in improving the purchasing function of management in the organization.

However, other objectives are as follows

1. To appraise and access the activities of the organization in relation to the purchasing function to reveal the strengths and weakness of the organization.

2. To highlight some of the impediments that hinders the organization effective purchasing of materials.

3. To suggest ways of improving the function of the organization.

4. To advice the company on proper utilization of resources when undertaking the purchasing function

5. As a pre-requisition condition for the award of a post graduate diploma in management science.

6. To add to existing knowledge and to aid students wanting to study or undertake research in the purchasing of materials.

1.4  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The main significant for the study is for partial fulfillment for the award of Post Graduate Diploma (PGDMS)in management science in Kaduna Polytechnic.

The researcher chooses this topic to highlight the inherent danger and consequence of adopting improper purchasing function of management from suppliers to the finished procedure in Hamdala Hotel Kaduna, with a view of providing solution or making the Hotel to take necessary corrective realistic measure of purchasing function and employ service of skillful, honest, qualified and intelligent personnel to mant the purchasing department.

If the solution top be provided in the research work are applied to purchasing function of management of this company, it will show the impact on the organization performance.

Another vital reason of the study is to contribute to the existing literature in the area of purchasing function for future reference.

The research work will be of a great benefit to the writer because more knowledge will be gained in the process of funding out information practically. This will broaden and enlarge the theories the researcher have learn and how they are implemented.

This is undertaken to enlighten the knowledge of those that have no idea of the profession. The place of purchasing to them has not contribution to profitability and efficiency of a business so this research work is to broaden there knowledge in order for them to know how vital is purchasing to any undertaking.

Finally, purchasing with its practical application needs to be brought home to decision makers, in both private and public sectors, so that they can appreciate what professional purchasing can do to help their organization especially in this time of economic meltdown.
