CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This is focused on the prevalence of caesarean section in Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital, Tudun-Wada, Kaduna.

Caesarean section is described as being an operative procedure hat s carried out under general anaesthesia whereby the fetus, placenta and membrane are deliver through an incision on the abdominal wall and the uterus. This is usually carried out after viability has been reached i.e 24th Weeks of gestation onwards Myles (2013).

A caesarean section is usually performed when a vaginal delivery would put baby’s or mother life or health at risk, although in recent times it has also been performed upon request for child birth that could other% and above in many Asian, European and Latin American countries Mathews [2010] se have been natural herald (2015).

In recent years the rate has risen to a record level of 46% in china and to level of 25% and above in many Asian, European and Latin American countries Mathews.

Medical professional policy maker’s finds that elective caesarean section can be harmful to the fetus without benefit to the mother, and have established strict guidelines for non-medically indicated caesarean section before 39 Weeks Savage (2012).

Concern has been expressed about the global rise in caesarean section rate particularly in Latin American Betran et al (2014). Caesarean section rate in Asian are generally thought to be lower through some countries have also experience an unprecedented rise Leone [2013] between 1990 and 2002, the rate among primiparous women living in cities in china has risen.

On the demand side, women may request a caesarean section because they fear the consequences of vaginal delivery Hong [2011] Rich and well educated women may prefer birth by Caesarean section to vaginal delivery because they think it is safer and free from pain and anxiety.

More evidence for this reasoning comes from the high proportion of indication for caesarean section categorised. As β€˜women’s request’’ or due to social factors. Laopaiboon (2014).

From the hospital records, it has been observed that the persistent high rate is observed among rich and well educated women Tang (2014). In contrast, other has emphasized health system factors, arguing that the risk in demand for caesarean section is largely stimulated by health care providers and result from financial incentive that encourage costly procedure Hong (2011). Total expenditure on caesarean section in china has certainly risen dramatically and the procedure has become an important source of income for hospitals and health care provider Hong (2011).

Another factor for the rising caesarean section rate is to get opportunity for sterilization Leone (2013).

1.1Β Β Β Β  STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

The prevalence of caesarean section is an issue of great concern to the health of a nation. A high caesarean section rate in developing countries like Nigeria is said to be a consequence of uterine rupture, cord prolapse cord presentation, Cephalo pelvic disproportion, multiple pregnancy, and obstructed labour and abnormal uterine action. In Nigeria, as in most sub-Saharan African countries, it has been suggested that women accepted caesarean section reluctantly even in the face of obvious clinical indications.

The study has been promoted therefore to recognize closely the causes and factors influencing the rate of caesarean section and to correct it earlier starting from the period of pregnancy.

The researcher expects to find out the prevalence of caesarean section which would serve as a reference for further studies.

This study will also help to provide information to students, nurses and midwives equipping them on the causes, and ways of preventing caesarean section

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
