CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

It is an understatement to say that human resources is important in any existing organization; it is the heart and backbone of an organization, which is necessary for its survival. But for human resource to perform its expected duties, it has to have an effective management, and thus human resource management. Human resource management is the process of acquiring, training, appraising, and compensating employees, and attending to their labor relations, health, safety, and fairness concern (Dessler, 2008).

Human resource management requires a package of measures including: employee involvement; relating pay to performance; care with selection, training and fair treatment of employees; and dovetailing of human resource matters with other company’s policies such as production, marketing and sales. The human element has been considered the most crucial in the attainment of any organization’s objective. Successful organization takes special arrangement in managing human beings. Hence, considerable attention should be devoted to human resource, bearing in mind that quality of personnel is very essential in any organization.

HRM plays a very important role in any organization, profit or nonprofit, private or public. The success and failure of any organization or group depends on the nature and how its human resource are effectively ( or otherwise) managed.

Human resource can positively or negatively influence the growth and development of any organization or groups, since every organization either public or private are made up of human resource. It’s a known fact therefore, that employees are the driving force that account for the growth (or otherwise) of any organization.

Generally, human resource is a crucial aspect of the Banking Industry, therefore, in order to realize its set target, there is  the increasing need for effective human resources in the Industry. Every manager therefore must be able to work effectively with people and to resolve satisfactorily, the many and varied problems that the management of these may entail.

Effective human resources in the banking sector or in any organization requires the development of a program that will permit employees to be selected and trained for these jobs that are most appropriate to their developed abilities.

Many organizations feel that developing their human resources is expensive and irrelevant, but they fail to realize the accrued benefits such as job efficiency, high productivity, good human relations, good communication and commitment. Hence, the importance of HRM in relation to productivity in an organization can not be over emphasized.

In view of the importance of human resources in any organization, this research attempts to examine human resource management of the Nigeria banking industry in general, and that of First Bank of Nigeria plc in particular which will serves as the case study.

Statement of the Problem

Effective management of human resources of any organization will result in the achievement of both the objectives of the organization and also a better utilization of other factors of production, that is land and capital, which might lead to the enhancement of social, political and economic development. Obviously, many organizations seem to have look down on the importance of human resource existence.

The human resources of the organization is not empowered to perform its duties and many bank’s employees, which make up the human resources, do not have good attitude towards both customers and their work. This has led to ineffectiveness and inefficiency of HRM in the banking industry.

This study is intended to look at the causes of ineffectiveness and inefficiency of human resource management in First Bank of Nigeria  and also the study will suggest how these problems will be solved because for First Bank of Nigeria to attain its target and for it to be able to function effectively, it must manage its human resources efficiently and effectively.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

This study attempts to achieve the following objective:

1. To establish whether or not FBN complies with its HRM policies.

2. To examine the roles played by HRM in helping FBN in achieving its stated goals and objectives.

3. To determine the appropriate and suitable motivational tools that can be used by FBN to enhance the efficiency of its employees.

4. To proffer solutions to problems that impedes effective human resource management in FBN.

1.4 Research Questions

1.1 Do FBN complies with its HRM policies?

1.2 What is the role played HRM in helping FBN to attain its stated goals and objective?

1.3 What are the suitable motivational tools that can be deployed to enhance employees, efficiency in FBN?

1.4 What are the problems that impede effective human resource management in FBN?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

In the course of this study, the following hypotheses will be tested:

Ho: There is no significant relationship between HRM and employees’ performance in FBN, Kaduna Main Branch.

1.6 Significance of the Study

Organizations are formed in order to meet up with certain demands and expectations. Business Organizations, for example, are formed in order for the promoters to make profit. Hence, all these rely on human resources for survival. With the aim of looking at the views of authors and suggestions about the human resource management and its development in banking sectors, this study can serve as a guide to any entrepreneur who wants to set up a new company.

The quality of personnel retained or employed in an organization will make or show the difference between a well managed organization and a poor managed one. Any organization that employs or retains skillful and well trained staff performs better than one that welcome cheap, unskilled, employee or staff.

It will also be useful to students for research purpose. It can also be useful to the general public, individuals who wish to have better understanding of development of effective human resources in the banking sector. Finally, it will serve as a base for future research in related fields.

The findings will provide organizations, particularly human resource management departments of banks with positive and information about the impact of human resource, as the sample of the study is drawn from their employees. The findings will help the employees in remedying their mistakes.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The scope of this study center on human resource management, its functions and the roles it plays in contributing to the development of an organization. The study intend to examine how human resources are being procured, effectively and efficiently managed, how they are allocated and valued on overall basis for the achievement of organizational goals and objectives. The study will also examine various development programs in the banking sector with reference to the case study.

1.8 Limitation of the Study

The study was limited by some factors such as: financial Constraint which makes it impossible for the researcher visit all the branches of FBN in Kaduna State.

Another limitation is time constraint, the researcher was unable to collect data from all the branches of FBN in Kaduna Sate due to time constraint.

Also, the employees of FBN have non-challant attitude towards the questionnaire administered to them by the researcher. There was delay in answering the questionnaires administered to the employees of FBN.

1.9 Definition of Key Terms

Human resources management ids concerned with the development of both individual and organization in which they operate.  The primary responsibilities associated to human resource management include:
