CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Breast feeding is the feeding of an infant or young ones child with breast milk from mammals (WHO, 2003).

Brest feeding also known as nursing is the feeding of babies and young children with milk from a woman’s breast. Health professionals recommended the breast feeding begin within the first hour of a baby’s life and continue as often and as much as the baby wants’ (WHO, 2003).

Exclusive breast feeding is the process of feeding an infant’s consumption of human milk with no supplementation of any type (no water, no juice, no human milk and no foods) except for vitamins, minerals and medications’ exclusive breast feeding till six months of age help to protect and infant from gastro intestinal infections in both developing and industrialized countries.

The risk of death due to diarrhea and other infections increases when babies are either partially breast feed or not breastfeed at all world health organization (WHO, 2001).

Breast milk is made from nutrients in the mother’s blood stream and bodily stores. Breast milk has an optional balance of fat, sugar, water and protein that is needed for a baby’s growth and development.

Growths of all infants from (0-6 months) need to be fed on a diet that provides all the nutrients and energy required for normal growth, vitamins and minerals to alleviate their hidden hunger and give them strong, the term “to wean means to accustom” and it describes the process by which baby is gradually introduced to foods other than milk and is recommended between the 4th -6 month of life.

It is transitional to change from liquid to solid diet, the feeding behavior change from sucking to chewing and biting and the obligatory introduction with mother or other care taker changes to independent feeding.

This is the time when growth faltering and nutritional deficiencies manifest in children and yet it is often the time when foods are given to provide the volume necessary to keep the child from being hungry without regard to the nutritional quality of the transitional foods. Introduction of timely, adequate & balanced wearing food is perhaps one of the most important single and direct remedial measures to combat infant’s malnutrition (UNICEF 2006).

1.1 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

Exclusive breastfeeding is new method of breastfeed which has been introduction by WHO/UNICEF. And has been found to be successful for solving many problems in an infant. Unfortunately, few mothers adopt exclusive breastfeeding (Grange, 1992); WHO, 2001).

The finding of this study will be useful to health educators and all those interested in passing the information based on the principles of exclusive breastfeeding. If the findings prove negative, then suggestions will be to health educators especially those working with mothers they need to increase their effort towards the teaching of the principles and practice of exclusive breastfeeding to mothers. (WHO 2001)
