CHAPTER ONE

1.1 INTRODUCTION

The topic of discussion is on the causes and psychological effect of unwanted pregnancy among teenage adolescence.

Adolescence means the period of life between childhood and adulthood starting from the age of ten (10) to the age of nineteen (19) where by the physical, and physiological changes in the body, and mind.

The changes include development of breast, development public hair, onset of menstrual cycle. Enlargement of the trips among others, during pregnancy there is usually an increase volume of blood of 40 – 50% from the onset of pregnancy mainly in plasma and red cells.

The most important event adolescents as far as the girls, and her mother are concerned is the onset of menstruation which may occur at any time between the age of 10 – 16years, this period is called monarchical period.

In rural societies the menarche was a mark that the girl is now a woman and could take up the duties and obligation of womanhood.

The culture and attitude of such is retained in many societies nowadays for some reasons which may be concerned with better nutrition.Β  The age of the onset of menstruating has become earlier.

Lack of knowledge about menstrual period has also contributes to indiscriminate unwanted pregnancy in adolescence.

In families, the parent lack adequate resources to meet their children needs, while some of the adolescents girls of after men which contribute to teenage pregnancy in community.

Teenage is refers to individuals between the age of 14 and 19 years, pregnancy is a state of having a development embryo or feotus in the uterus which usually last for about 280 days.

Teenage pregnancy is defined:- as a teenage or under – aged girls becoming pregnant. It can be defined as a live birth, fetal death or abortion occurring in a female under 20 years of age.

Unwanted pregnancy means having pregnancy without marriage among adolescent girls, and boys.

Most of the unwanted pregnancy in the society end in abortion and most of the effect of the abortion has lead to causes of maternal mortality as a result of life threatening post abortion complication.

In Nigerian, many women die due to complications arising from abortion due to ignorance of balance diet, lack of good obstetric care, early marriage, illiteracy, tradition beliefs, and other cause may include unsatisfactory method, and lack of adequate health facility, and so on, such as trauma during delivery include dystocia, and ruptured uterus and some cases, severe toxemia (a generalized poisoning of the body by the product of bacteria or damaged tissues) of pregnancy.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Increasing number of adolescent girls are becoming sexually active, and they are having sex at an earlier age. It seems obvious that as premarital sexual intercourse is now common among teenagers, parent, and society have an obligation to make sure that young people have sexual knowledge, and opportunity to obtain efficient preventive measures like oral contraceptive without difficulties.

If teenagers/adolescent are to become responsible to their own sexuality, they need to understand their own sexuality, and to have contraceptive accessible to them.

Problem of unwanted teenage pregnancy is becoming rampant, and this as a result of ignorance, lack of awareness can lead to indiscriminate, pregnancies among adolescent girls in the community.

1.3 GENERAL OBJECTIVES

To determine the causes, and the psychological effect of unwanted pregnancy in teenagers, and adolescent in Makera District of Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Β 1.4Β  SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

To determine the occurrences of the unwanted pregnancy in teenage adolescent

To determine the consequences of the teenage adolescent pregnancy.

And to know the psychological effect of the unwanted pregnancy.

1.5 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to identify and examine the problems associated with the unwanted pregnancy.

To find out the possible causes, and predisposing factors of the pregnancy.

To the find out possible solution of reducing teenage adolescent unwanted pregnancy, and reducing maternal morality as a result of the pregnancy and possible abortioning, complication.

It is also belief that the result finding, and recommended of this research work will not only be useful to the local government, and to all areas that might be having similar problems.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The research work assist parent to know the causes, and psychological effect of the unwanted and teenage pregnancy.

It will educate adolescent on the need for maturity before child birth.

It will also prevent complication that might run the teenagers, and rendering them helpless, and hopeless in life.

To achieve these, adequate health education on sex education should be intestify.

To give them an awareness on the risk of sexually transmitted disease to both adolescent, and the parent.

So that there will be good care, and attention to women of child bearing age (and a good maternal health services should be available.

And also to reduce or stop maternal death, and motherless babies as a result of unwanted pregnancy and possible abortion.

The research is also designed to provide ways or measures to prevent unwanted pregnancy in adolescent, and to also eradicate abortion among adolescent, and also to transform information regarding to these health problem.

1.7 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Are the adolescent (teenagers) aware of the causes, and psychological effect of teenage adolescent pregnancy.

What are the problem associated with teenage adolescent pregnancy.

In what ways could teenagers adolescent pregnancy be reduced.

Could health education about menstrual cycle be useful in reducing adolescent unwanted pregnancy.

Is incidence of unwanted pregnancy abortion high between the ages of 15 – 25 years

Does the peer groups contributes to the unwanted pregnancy and abortion among adolescents.
