1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
A birth plan is defined as a document that describes a woman’s need or requirement in relation to her antenatal care must multigravidae, i.e. women who have previously had more than one pregnancy, facilitated their preparation for birth by putting aside money, for the cost of delivery; unanticipated emergency expenses or purchasing items for the baby. (e.g. Clothing towels, blankets, soap, napkins etc.).
But this is usually during their first pregnancy and delivery as a primigravideae the altitude of women toward pregnancy and child birth keep changing subsequent pregnancies as some believe it is not necessary as they do not know whether the pregnancy would result to in alive baby or not (Komabay and Migori district Kenya December 2013/March 2013)
Birth preparedness; an approach to improved the use and effectiveness of key maternal and newborn health services, is based on the premise that preparing for birth and being ready for it’s potential complication. A birth preparedness plan is an action plan that is developed by the woman and her family members.
It is ongoing discussion with the woman and her family to ensure that she and her baby will receive appropriate care, promptly at the time of birth and if complication arises before or after the birth. Having a birth plan can minimize any complication and emergencies at the time of birth and increase the likelihood that the woman and her baby will receive appropriate timely care. Childbirth is one of the greatest event in every woman’s life. Having had fantasies about pregnancy and motherhood when confronted with the reality many of them doubt their ability to cope with this great event in their lives. Influenced by family, friends and relatives, they get prepared in different ways as they approach the experience of child birth.
At this time, the mothers need lots of help for the realization and acceptance of child birth as a normal physiological phenomenon. She needs to develop a healthy attitude towards preparing. So that she might have a safe and emotionally satisfying experience of labour and a rapid recovery both mentally and physical in the puerpenum. Today most health care providers recommend or offer childbirth preparation classes to expectant parent.
These are different method of childbirth preparation:- they are Dick-Read Method or Natural Method, Lamaze Method, Psycho-Prophylactic Method, Modified Lamaze Method and Bradley Method respectively. These methods require a great deal of concentration, training and practice.
The spouse or a significant other plays an important role as “Coach” encouraging the mother to focus, reminding her of what breathing technique to use and providing comfort measure, including back rubs and mouth care. Baby Center Medical Advisory Board (October 2014)
Preparation classes should be provided at free of cost to every antenatal out patient department for every antenatal mothers. Hence, the researcher idea was interested in the above area and wanted to impact knowledge regarding birth preparedness plan among the multigravidae mothers in NOK primary Health Care of Jaba Local Government Area.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Unplanned and unprepared pregnancy and childbirth often result to pregnancy and childbirth complications.
Pregnancy and childbirth events that needs to be planned and prepared for. A planned pregnancy and childbirth keep changing in subsequent pregnancies as some believe it is not necessary to plan and prepared for childbirth. Since they don’t know whether the pregnancy would result in a live baby or not this bring about majority of women keep coming to labour ward unprepared.
Multigravidae women, are women that have experienced childbirth more once despite their past experience, they keep coming to the labour ward unprepared for childbirth.
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
To determine opinions on birth preparation and plan for the multigravidae women
To find out factors that hinders birth preparation by multigravidae women
To assess their attitude on birth preparation
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
These findings will help to enhance the development of positive attitudes and perception towards birth preparation; it will be an eye opener to the general public on the importance of birth plan and birth preparedness. It will also serve as a source of material for related research work, which will help to find out the hinder of inadequate birth preparation by multigravidae and its effect on the health of the mother and child.
1.5 RESEARCH QUESTION
What are the opinion of multigravidae on birth preparations and plans?
What are the factors that hinder birth preparation?
What are their attitude on birth preparation and plan in the hospital?
1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this study is limited to the attitude of the multigravidae women towards birth preparation plan in antenatal clinic at NOK Primary Health Center, Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The limitation of this study is the lack of cooperation by multigravidae women.
1.7 OPERATIONAL DEFINATIONS OF TERMS
Attitude: it is the general feeling or predisposition of an individual about a person, object, situation and/or activity.
Multigravidae: is a pregnant woman who has previously had more than one pregnancy.
Multipara: a woman who has been delivered of more than on viable baby.
Birth preparation: it is a process of planning for safe delivery.
Physiological: Being in accord with or characteristic of the normal functioning of living organism.
Puepernum: The period following childbirth during which the maternal uterus and others organs and structures are returning to the non-pregnant state.
Significant other: A significant other is any person who has great importance to an individual life or wellbeing.
Pregnancy: The condition of having a developing embryo or fetus within the body.
Conception:: The fusion of spermatozoa and ovum to form a viable zygote.
Labour: Is the process of by which the fetus, placenta and membranes are expelled through the birth canal.
