CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Malnutrition is one of the biggest health problem that the world currently aces and is associated with more than 41% of the death that occur annually in children from 6 to 24 month of age in developing countries which total approximately 2.3 million world health organization in 2001 reported that 54% of all child hood mortality was attributable, directly to malnutrition.

Sub Saharan African has a high prevalence of the difference types of malnutrition namely stunting and  wasting underweight  feeding practice during infancing are critical for the growth development and health of a child during the first two years of life and of importance for the early prevention of chronic degenerative diseases progress in improving infant the young  child feeding practices in the developing world has been remarkably show due to several factors like poverty and poor hygienic condition the 2003 Nigeria demographic and health survey (NDHS) show that 38 percent of Nigeria children under the age of five year are stunted 29 percent are underweight and 9.2 percent wasted .

The Nigeria consumption and nutrition survey 2001-2003 observed similar trends among this age group with 42 percent stunted 25 percent underweight and 9 percent wasted it will be of greater help if a consumption is conducted which will help to identify current good practices to be supported for improving the feeding practices of the children as effective strategies for solving child in malnutrition.

Such a study will be contribution knowledge on food consumption and nutritional status of under five in Nigeria

Nigeria ranked 8th in the world in the prevalence of mortality rates of under fives with a staggering figure of 189/1000 in 2008 malnutrition is under lying cause in more than 50% of these deaths the world health organization estimate that approximately 150 million children younger than 5 year in developing countries are under weight and an additional 200 million are stunted.

Malnutrition contributes to Nigeria current health problems (morbidity and mortality) in several ways under nutrition remains a devastating problem in many developing countries affecting over 815 million people causing more than half of child death although (WHO) world health organization (UNICEF) united nation international children emergency fund and Nigeria national breast feeding to 24 month and beyond for optimal survival growth  development unfortunately only 17% of infant under six month of age are exclusive breast feed in Nigeria the poor breastfeeding  and in adequate complementary feeding explained the protein energy malnutrition level in children as they grow older

To determine social economic factors of women in Taro Taro community of Rigasa Igabi Local government.

To determine the feeding pattern of the children.

The determine the nutritional status of children from six month to two year
