Before now, department of Geography was under faculty of social sciences in the University. That’s why some of its general admission requirements to some extent are familiar with that of social science courses: Department of geography just like others overs undergraduates and post graduate courses and the requirements for admission into the department are as follows:

UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR B.SC GEOGRAPHY
Students are admitted to the Department by two modes: University Matriculation (UTME) and Direct Entry. The duration of the Programme for candidates admitted through UTME is four (4) and those admitted by direct entry is three (3) years.
The department also admits candidates from the University of Ilorin science remedial program. Such candidate should have a credit pass in Geography.

Candidates for UTME entry should pass at Credit level five SSC/GCE `O` level/NECO including English language, Geography , Mathematics and One other subject which may be either a science or a social sciences subject earned at not more than two sittings except that English language or Mathematics which might be accepted at a third sitting.Direct Entry
In addition to UTME entry requirements, candidates should have G.C.E `A` level or N.C.E passes in Geography and the Social Science or science subject.

Direct entry is considered for candidates who in addition to meeting the O/L requirements, sat and had at least two A/Level passes in Economics and any other Social science subject in examinations conducted by Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) or any other approved body or possess the Diploma in Money and Banking with at least Upper Credit from University of Ilorin.UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTGRADUATES STUDENTS
i. Admission Requirements for Postgraduate Diploma in Geographic information System (PGDGIS)
Admission to PDGIS is opened to graduates of university of Ilorin and other university and Institutions recognized the senate with a B.Sc degree Hons, H.N.D or its equivalent in geography, Environmental science, sciences, other Social Sciences, forestry, Engineering, Architecture, town Planning e.t.c.
Notwithstanding the above, candidates with substantial working experience who have attained managerial position in public and private organization may still be consider on individual merit.Duration of Course
The PGDGIS Programme in the University of Ilorin runs on Full-Time part-Time basis. The Programme has duration of 12 calendar months and 18 calendar months for Full-Time and Part-Time respectively.

ii. M.Sc. Geography and Environmental Management
Admission Requirements
Candidates are admitted into Master Degree Programme if they have a minimum of Second Class (upper Division) Honours degree in Geography, Environmental management and other related disciplines recognized by the senate of the University. In addition all such candidates must have passed an oral examination to be conducted by the Department.However, graduates of University of Ilorin or any other approved University who achieved a second class lower division may be admitted provided they satisfied the Board of Postgraduate School by scoring a minimum of 55% in a qualifying examination administered by the University.
iii. Masters Degree in Geographic Information System (MGIS)
Admission Requirement
Admission to MGIS Programme is open to Graduates of the University of Ilorin or any other approved University with appropriate Bachelors degree with a second class Upper Division or its equivalent in relevant disciplines. However, graduates of the University of Ilorin or any other approved University who achieved a lower classification of the degree of Bachelor less than Second Class Upper division may be admitted provided they satisfy the Board of Postgraduate School by scoring a minimum of 55% in the qualifying examination administered by the University.Notwithstanding the above, Candidates with professional qualification such as HND with a minimum of five years post qualification experience may be admitted provided they score a minimum of 55 % in a qualifying examination administered by the University.
Course Duration
The MGIS runs for 18 calendar months for Full-Time students that is three full semesters. Seminar presentation and research project will occupy the third semester. The pat-Time programme shall runs for 24 months. Only Students who are successful in all the set courses and the research project will be awarded the degree.
iv. Ph.D Geography and Environmental Management
Admission Requirements
Candidates with M.Sc. degree in Geography and Environmental management of the University of Ilorin and other recognized universities are eligible for admission into the Ph.D degree Programme in Geography and Environmental management provided they score at least 60% in their final M.Sc degree examination. In addition all such candidates must have passed an oral examination to be conducted by the Department.Course Duration
3. The Programme will be run on both Part-Time and Full-Time basis. The Full-Time students spend a minimum of 30 calendar months and a maximum of 42 calendar months on the Programme. Part-Time students have a minimum of 42 calendar months and 54 calendar months maximum. On Expiration of maximum duration, a candidate may apply for extension of not more than two consecutive periods of 12 calendar months after which the Programme.
