INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The term “Meteorology” is the study of the atmosphere; atmospheric phenomenon and atmosphere effect on our weather. The atmosphere is the gaseous layer of the physical environment that surrounds a planets. Earth’s atmosphere is roughly 100 to 125 kilometers (65-75 miles) thick. Gravity keeps the atmosphere from expanding much further.
Meteorology is a sub-discipline of the atmosphere science. A term that covers all studies of the atmosphere. A sub-discipline is a specialized field of study within a broader subject or discipline. Climatology and aeronomy are also sub-discipline of the atmosphere science. Meteorology focuses on the lower parts of the atmosphere, primarily the atmosphere where most weather takes place.
The meteorological station either on land or sea is a facility with instruments and equipmentsfor measuring atmospheric conditions to provide information for weather forecast and to study the weather and climate. The measurement taken include; temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, wind speed, wind direction and precipitation amount. But this project work is rehabilitation and updating of the meteorological station.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The meteorological station of the department of Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineering of Kaduna Polytechnic, were misused and some were stolen.In this case, there was still no proper maintenance of the instruments. This affects the practical of most engineering courses such as Agroclimatology, soil and water conservation etc.
In view of this problem, the challenge of rehabilitating and replacement of the instruments in the meteorological station of Agricultural and Bio-Bio Environmental Engineering Department was given to the students to enhance proper teaching and learning of meteorological process.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
The aim of this project is to rehabilitate and replace the instruments and equipments in the meteorological station in order to improve its desired purpose in Agricultural and Bio-Environment Engineering Department and other fields concerned.
The objectives of this project are:
To construct a Stevenson Screen of size 0.41m X 0.41m in the meteorological station.
To provide atmospheric thermometer.
To replace the barometer in the station.
To replace the wet and dry bulbs thermometer in the station.
To replace the maximum and minimum thermometer in station.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The instrument in the meteorological station will provide both the technologist, lecturers the ease to conduct practical in the department without visiting another department for the furthermore, it will provide further student research opportunity from theoretical classroom lecture in the area of agro climatology, Irrigation and Drainage etc.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This project involves the inspection, evaluation and determination of faulty and missing instruments in the meteorological station. Generally, the scope of this project is to rehabilitate and replace the instruments and equipments in the meteorological station of the department of Agricultural & Bio-Environment Engineering Kaduna Polytechnic.
