ABSTRACT
A charge controller is basically a voltage and/or current regular to keep batteries from over charging. It regulates the voltage and current coming from the solar panels going to the battery. A charge controller may be used to power D.C output and stores excess energy in a battery as well as monitoring the battery voltage to prevent under or over charging. An inverter can be connected to the output of a charge controller to driver A.C loads.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background of Study
Solar energy is the radian light and heat energy from the sun. The solar energy that reaches the earth can be used to produce electricity or heat through the uses of solar collector e.g. a closed car can be viewed as a solar collector-the light energy that passes through the window glass is absorbed by the carβs interior and itβs converted into heat energy. This becomes trapped inside the vehicle.
Types of charge controller
ON Off: this is a type charge controller which monitors the battery voltage and opens the circuit, stopping the charging, when the battery voltage rises to a certain level.
PWM: pulse width modulation is the most effective means to achieve constant voltage battery charging by adjusting the duty ratio of the switches (MOSFET).
MPPT: maximum power point tracker: they match the output of the solar panel to the battery voltage to insure maximum charge (AMPA)
Statement of Problem
Each day, the sun rises in the heat, moves across the sky and sets in the west, whenever the sun is shinning, it sends energy in our direction. We can feel the heat from the sun, and we can see objects that are illuminated by the light from the sun as it moves across the sky. However, if we could get a charge controller to turn and look at the sun all day, then it would be receiving the maximum amount of sunlight possible and converting it into useful energy for electricity.
Motivation
Since the brighter the sunlight, the more voltage the solar cells produce the excessive voltage could damage the batteries. A charge controller is used to maintain the proper charging voltage on the batteries. As the input voltage from the solar array rises, the charge controller regulates the change to the batteries preventing any overcharging.
Aims and Objective
1. The aims and objectives of this project are:
2. To absorb energy from the sun and convert it into solar energy
3. To protect and control the batteries from over charging
4. To maintain a proper charging voltage on the batteries
5. To reduce overall system maintenance
6. Longer battery life.
