The study examined the impact of computer on office professionals’ effectiveness. The objectives of the study include; to investigate the benefit of computer to the performance of office professionals in an organization, ascertain if the introduction of computer has rendered office professionals redundant in modern offices and find out the computer skills required by office professionals among others. The theoretical basis for the study was done through the review of related literature from textbooks, journals, periodic, conference papers and internet.
The entire population of 120 respondents comprising of the executives and office professionals in the organizations under study was used for the study in view of the small size involved. A set of questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Data were analyzed using mean statistical tool of the Four Point Likert Scale.
The findings of the study revealed that introduction of computer rendered office professionals redundant in modern offices as lack of computer knowledge has subjected office professionals under pressure while trying to meet up with their work schedules. Thus, the study recommends among others that office professionals should try to embark on training programs most especially on computer so as to improve their job performance.

1.1 Background of the Study
Computer is now being used in almost every area of societal endeavors. As a problem solving tools, it has been used extensively in business organization, in research and many others of area of life. Organization of any size need to know many facts about their employees, they have to pay their salaries, retrench some and make returns of many facts relating to their employment to the Government. All these require the keeping of comprehensive records on every employee.
From such records, a number of reports can be produced on the effectiveness and efficiency of the employees(Adeniyi and Awoyemi, 2008).
In business, computer track inventories with bar code and scanners, check the credit status of customers, receive timely information about production in stock and transfer funds electronically. Computer programs, or applications to aid every level of education, from programs that teach simple addition or sentence construction to programs that teach advanced calculus.
Educators use computers to track grades and communicate with students; with computer-controlled projection units, they can add graphics, sounds, and animation to their communications.
Computers are used extensively in scientific research to solve mathematical problems, investigate complicated data, or model systems that are too costly or impractical to build, such as; testing the air flow around the next generation of aircraft.
The military employs computers in sophisticated communications to encode and unscramble messages, and to keep track of personnel and supplies Lawyers use online legal data bank to locate precedent cases in order to serve client better. The impact of computer on office professional as well as government officialcan not be overemphasized as it has helped with planning, control and provide guidance for budgeting. Likewise, health care provider use computer to diagnose ailment of their patient (Synder, 2009).
Owing to the advent of computer in the society the careers of office professionals are broader than ever before. Office professionals challenged careers in computer positions as information system managers, system designers, programmers, operators and data processors (Tenibiaje, 2012).
One may be prone to ask who an office professional is.According to American Society of Administrative Professionals (2012),an office professional is a person whose work consists of supporting management including executives, using a variety of project management, communication and organizational skills, computer skills etc.
Office professional by training, are supposed to be embedded with managerial skills, information management skills, business communication skills, computer skills along with the basic skills in clerical works that are done in the office.
These skills when fully utilized would bring about effectiveness and in turn would increase the productivity of the organization as routine duties, co-operation in the office and production of business documents, would no longer be the task of the executive thereby reducing his work load and helping him concentrate on other major duties.
Elendu (2010), opines that, an effective office professional has the necessary skills and attribute of arranging matters and accepting responsibilities, dealing with conflicting issues and priorities, decision making according to routine practices and anticipating boss needs and meeting them. He/she is also able to co-ordinate the activities of subordinates and communicate effectively, getting information with knowledge of business situations and dealing with people, staff and outsiders, smoothly and perfectly using computer and other sophisticated gadgets.
Office professional functions play an invaluable and essential role in achieving productivity in an organizational administration and management. This is because; office professionals are versed in the art office administration and management procedures.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The effects of computer on the office professional’s effectiveness cannot be over emphasized. Computer has transformed the workplace and society as a whole. People and organizations have become dependent on computers to connect them to co-workers, customers and information. computers are used to track schedules and provide needed data. Computers also provided office professionals countless tools for business and easier access to information nearby or abroad.
