CHAPTER ONE
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Prior to the introduction of computer, both the public and private sectors of the economy strived hard in order to achieve set goals. These goals are expressed in terms of objectives to achieved increasing revenue, reducing cost and improving services rendered. These objectives need to be archived within various constraints and without the limitation of available resources. All these are done through manual operation.
Effect Of Internal Audit In An Organization
Accounting Information As A Basis For Managerial Decision-Making
The Nigeria traditional banking was characterized by lab or intensive method of carrying out bank operations. The means of sharing information was through the exchange of paper work placing telephone calls and or gathering around a conference table in which much time and a lot of many face to face meeting presentation are required to reach good decision.
However, by 1986, when the structural Adjustment programme (SAP) was introduced, the forces unleashed by liberalization and de-regulating not only changed the structure of the industry, but also the content of services and banking business leading to increased competition among banks as well as between banks and other financial institutions.
This competition is not only in the area of struggle for the available clients but also for skilled manpower, capital deposit and ability to use the relevant information for decision.
In order to cope with these increasing volume of services, competitiveness, customers sophistication and the globalization of financial services, which is investing in information technology in an innovative manner. The reason for this is the fact that in the future, banking transactions would most likely be conducted in cyber space.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The complexities of modern day organization processes, necessitate the use of aids such as computer to organize information. Therefore, the growing inability of Nigeria banks to fully adopt information technology in packaging and delivery of banking services Vis-Γ -vis banks in the developed world is the major research problems.
Most banks in this country seem to have problems in establishing data networks; long customerβs queues still characterized the banking halls of the big banks. Clearing of cheques is still major constraints on the internal growth of the banks and the effect on the nationβs economic development.
