CHAPTER ONE:
INTRODUCTION
Drug abuse, also known as substance abuse is a patterned use of drug[s] in which the user consumes the substance in amounts or with methods which are harmful to themselves or others. It involves the use of drugs without following appropriate prescriptions and the maladaptive use of certain illegal drugs.
The exact cause of substance abuse is not clear, with theories including: a genetic disposition, learned from others, or a habit which if addiction develops, manifests as chronic debilitating disease.
Drugs most often associated with this term[drug abuse] include: alcohol, substituted amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methaqualone, cannabis and opioids.
In many cases, criminal and anti social behaviour occur when the person is under the influence of a drug, and long term personality changes in individuals may occur as well.
Drug abuse is widespread with and estimated 120 million users of hard drugs such as cocaine, heroin and other synthetic drugs. In 2013, drug use disorder resulted in 127,000 deaths up from 53,000 in 1990. the highest number of deaths are from opioid use disorder at 51,000, cocaine use disorder resulted in 4,300 deaths and amphetamine use disorder resulted in 3,800 deaths. Alcohol use disorder resulted in an additional 139,000 death
DRUG ADDICTION
Most of these drugs are initially used at will or voluntarily, but after series of consumptions, the individual finds it hard to stop the usage of these drugs because they posses some elements that alter the consumer’s system and makes it accustomed to the drugs, so to say that the individual lacks decision abilities and is said to be dependent on the drug or drugs for psychological and physiological well being.
CHAPTER TWO
CLASSIFICATION OF DRUGS
Drugs can be commonly categorized into hard drugs and soft drugs regarding their effects on the human body when taken.
These drugs lead to physical addiction when taken. Many countries do not allow people to make, sell or use some of these drugs, other than for medical purposes.
Examples of such drugs include: opiates [heroine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, morphine, etc], benzodiazepines, flunitrazepam, methamphetamine, cocaine, alcohol, GHB, and nicotine. Even some of them that are legally sold like alcohol and nicotine, taxes are paid for them.
