INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The automobile service center is the unifying functional aspect between the automobile user and their manufacturer/ dealer. The proposed automobile sales and service center is an attempt at providing a place of safety for automobile of its kind in the country. Automobile sales and servicing is a capital intensive project which very few people invest in.
In Nigeria, automobile sales and services centre have been in existence since early 1980s when Nigeria began to venture into volatile capital-intensive business like Peugeout Automobile Nigeria (PAN) Kaduna, Volkswagen Lagos, Fiat Kano, Mercedes Enugu, and Steyr Bauchi.
An automobile sales and service centre is therefore a special organization incorporating commercial sales and after sales service function that go side by side with each other.
1.2 Problem Statement
The use of automobile in Nigeria is on the increase usually for transportation and conveyance of goods and people. Automobiles in bad working condition could not meet up with the demand of the users. As such, proper routine servicing and checks are required.
Consequently, used vehicles with reduced life span are mostly imported to Nigeria. The need to ascertain their efficiency and performance cannot be over emphasized. Hence, the provision of a standard functional enclosed space known as “Automobile Services/Sales Centre” to mitigate these challenges.
1.3 Aim and Objectives
Aim
The aim of this research is to design a befitting automobile service centre that will bearchitecturally functional, aesthetically appealing and environmentally conducive which will provide automobile servicing, repairs and checks.
Objectives
The specific objectives of the study are to:
Design aesthetics and functional spaces that enhances sales and services provided for customer
Provide a functional structure that will have the necessary facilities and equipment needed in standard modern automobile service centre
Provide a center that gives automobile servicing, repairs and checks to automobile owners/users
Explore techniques and strategies that enhances natural lighting and ventilation in the automobile industries
1.4 Motivation
There is need to set up an automobile service centre in any society and Kaduna in particular is of very great importance as its service are required by tourists and business community, government and private organizations. The aim is to examine customer’s maximum service in the form of content and functional maintenance of their vehicles at an affordable cost and operated by customers and dealers respectively.
1.5 Architectural Significance
Due to the fact that socio-economic and industrial relevance such as this automobile sales and service center should constitute a prominent visual feature in terms aesthetics.
As an architect, there is need to design a comprehensive automobile sales and service center with various functionalities that are lacking in existing ones and to contribute to the promotion of bringing such structure to standard, like the space, circulation flow of function, natural lighting and ventilation, and the useof sustainable materials such as steel, glass, portal frames etc.
1.6 Scope and Limitation
This project will restrict itself to the provision of sales and service station, indoor display and parking facilities.
1.7 Research Methodology
Case Studies: automobile sales and service centers within and outside Kaduna were visited
Physical survey measurement
Reading of architectural journals, relevant books etc
Oral Interview: formal interview was conducted with managers, after sales personnel, marketers of the automobile centers visited.
