The aim of this project is to design and construct a direct-on-line starter using a logic circuit to serve as an extra protective device to electric motor. The heart of the project is the logic circuit, which is designed to provide an additional protection of the electric motor against single phasing.
The other part consists of the power circuit, which comprises of overload relay, miniature circuit breaker, contactor, which the electric motor-.is connected and also serves as protection to the motor; the control circuit is specially designed ‘to monitor the operation of the electric motor. This construction can be used in lift system, cranes, in industries and on lathe machines.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE REPORT
An electric motor is a device designed such that it converts electrical energy (input) into mechanical energy (output) in the form of a rotating motion. An electric motor is the most common machine for powering ventilation fans, and mostly used in processing industries today.
Every machine needs to be controlled; this can be achieved by the use of starter. A starter is an electrical control circuit used in industries for starting of an electric motor as well as stopping it.
The electric motor could be configured to work in either forward or backward direction. This is usually achieved by interchanging two of the phases. In other word, a starter is an electric controller for starting, stopping and regulating a motor from rush to normal speed. With this type of starter, i.e. direct-on-line, the starter is connected directly to the three-phase mains supply.
Typically, the peak staring current is between 5 and 8 times normal full load current and the peak staring torque is between 0.5 and 1.5 times the motor’s nominal operation. The idea of rotating magnetic field was developed by Francois Aragon in 1824, and first implemented by Waiter Baily. Based on this, practical induction motors were independently invented by Nikolas Tesla in 1883 ar.d Galileo Ferraris in 1885.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Faults and remedies direct on line
1. If contactor fails to energies when push button is energies, then check.
2. Condition of the circuit breaker
3. Continuely of the path from control breaker to the start push button.
4. Condition of the start push button
5. Continuely of the contactor coil
Remedies
1. Change circuit breaker if found faulty
2. Replace normally open element if found faulty
3. Replace contactor coil if possible or contactor
4. Continuely of the path to the contactor coil should be continuous when push button energies
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The objectives of this project is to design and construct direct on-line starter with phase failure to save as protective device to electric motor. The main objectives are as follows.
1. The contactor will not energize if there is single phasing which means the contactor can only energize if all the phases are in good condition.
2.The circuit breaker will trip off if there is excess current and if eventually the circuit breaker fails, then the over load will function which means the overload serves as a backup to the circuit breaker.
