INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of Problem
The errors associated with the existing manual method of processing of students results in most Universities, including the Kaduna State University, make it not only desirable but imperative that computerized approach be used to the full in measuring students’ progress. The manual methods being employed suffer a number of set-backs.
They make the process to be time consuming and prone to error. They lead to examination results being published late, sometimes with wrong grades being entered and students’ grade point averages being wrongly computed as a result, and ultimately leading to wrong conclusions being arrived at on class of degree awarded.
Some students could end up with undeserved good class of degree, while others could be unfairly victimized, bringing about frustration and bad blood. The Departments concerned, and the whole University, could become tarnished. The problem, therefore, that arises is to find a method of processing examination results that would be sufficiently accurate and reasonably timely.
The software application in this article is intended to bring relieve by providing for timely and accurate processing of students results using the processing power of the computer. The rest of the article discusses the materials and method used in the work, and the results recorded. The article ends with a conclusion.
1.2 Problem Statement
The university has been facing difficulties in calculating and computing students’ results (CASE STUDY: DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCE; POST GRADUATE PROGRAM). Inaccurate and unreliable CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) has been calculated over the years in which students of the case study calculates their CGPA which differs from the university’s records.
1.3 Scope and Limitations
This study is redirected to solve the problem of result computation of CGPA in Mathematical Science Department, Faculty of Science, Kaduna State University, Kaduna State. The study will help reduce the problems faced during the computation and enable fast and accurate calculation.
This research work is limited to providing a more reliable mobile application CGPA calculator that will handle the calculation of Student CGPA within the higher institutions.
1.4 Limitation of Study
Some problems were experienced in this study, they were:
- Financial limitation, bound by lack of finance.
- Inadequate knowledge of study.
- Shortage of time and duration in handling the study.
- Inadequate research due to lack of resource centers.
- Lack of full understanding of the high level programming language used in the study.
1.5 Aim or Goal
The aim of this study is to identify the problems inherent in the existing system of calculating cumulative Grade Point Average, and to proffer a remedy to the existing problem. The solutions are as follows:
–Â To Design a mobile application that can calculate the CGPA of exam result of Post graduate student in Kaduna State University.
–Â To Make Calculation of CGPA of result fast and easy to use.
–Â To introduce a computation of CPGA using a mobile program.
–Â A flexible and transferable application that can be used by any student of the department to calculate CGPA.
1.6 Objective
To achieve the goal of this research steps taken are:
– The use of Java, eclipse and quadova to develop a mobile application that can calculate CGPA android version 4.1.
– The application on completion, on computation and calculation Of CGPA displays student CGPA with ease.
– The hardware required to run this mobile application is a android mobile phone with and operating system of 4.1.
1.7 Significance of Study
Due to the fact that the world is becoming more and more computerized, there is need for the implementation of this system because of the paperwork in the computation of CGPA and lack of track of students’ results and their CGPA.
This study facilitates accurate calculation of students’ CGPA to enable staff know where the student’s CGPA fall in the class of degree i.e. either IST class, 2nd class etc, and also enable students know their grades. There is need for this study to be implemented because of its benefits and functions.
Ignoring this study could lead to various consequences like; the inability to hold track of students’ results, CGPA. It could also lead to the inability of the University to know students with good grades and performance and which student is to be taught and encouraged to improve in his/her studies.
1.7 Definition Of Terms
Some relevant words were used in the study, and they are as follows:
Result: A final score or mark in a contest or examination.
Computation: To calculate a particular tin.
Grade: A mark indicating the quality of a student’s work.
CGPA: An abbreviation for Cumulative Grade Point Average.
Credit Unit: It is a unit that is an equivalent value to an academic course.
Lecturer: A member of the faculty in the university that lead research groups and supervise research students, as well as teach them.
Grading System: This is the pattern and methods used to award a value to the student’s scores.
Undergraduate Student: Refers to students who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree.
