INTRODUCTION
The construction of an eclectically powered departmental signboard as a project topic that we embarked on became necessary as a way of putting into application the engineering and Technological knowledge acquired in the field of mechanical engineering. It is a starting point of actualizing a functional technology in the country.
In 1881 the first electrical sign was built with in candescent bulb in London, England and featured the word βEDISONβ during the international electrical exposition in January, 1882 . The united states pioneered the might display type of out door advertising, and the era of the illuminated sign is distinctly American.

It becomes necessary to design a proper departmental signboard in the form of a guide towards the department.
An electrically powered department signboard is a sort of compartments which is meant to house hold the components of the electric lightening attach into the signboard, which enables the proper reflection by that white transparent plastic material. As this sign system is made to be powered by electricity, therefore a switch will be use to control the OFF and ON.
Since this project is meant to serve for a very long period of time (years) the issue of control switch now become a factor of advantage which will help in our absence to prolong the life span of the electrical component of this project, since the mean primary purpose of the project is to direct, show to those new, the location of the department.
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Personal signboards have undergone modification over the years. Since their invention, various designs of Departmental signboards have also been constructed to fit these signboards as their modification continues. The fundamental changes that actually exist in this modification of signboards were based on the size reduction. One important aim was to males this signs visible during the day as well as at night provided the power source remains constantly available.
As the miniaturization continued, the quality increased and the value attached to the signboards also increase. No longer as in the ancient time where banners were used as signboards, only tells you where you are, but this provides you with guide to even where you are heading to, most especially in the dark (Night) where there is on one to ask or seek for direction, this signboard serves that purpose.
The idea of departmental signboard came up as admission into the department increases, thereby giving rooms for both Non-indigenes as well as foreigners (People from different countries) for instance, the Cameroonians, Ghanaians, Congolese, and also people from other neighboring countries, who comes here for study purpose. Due to language difference, this signboard serve as a means to convey them in to this department.
Down the line, from the ancient days to this present day model, signboards have also undergone modifications. These are now made smaller and more compactable to go with the trend; more so, signboards are now considered also as decoration at schools, hospitals, churches, hotels, amazement parks as well as recreational centers.
Due to the size and weight of the components of the signboard, a metal sheet is used to frame it round so as to prevent it from water damage during the rainy season and also to bear the weight of its accessories/component used in the construction.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Various designs of signboards have existed and served their various purposes. But as modern technology of production of these signboards improves, some shortcoming in the designs of these signboards becomes more and obvious. For instance the integrated circuitry technology introduced the electrically powered signboards have resulted to the existence and gradual domination of small personal signboard over their large predecessors.
This trend has made obvious the fact that this almost out dated architecture consumes useful space with their signboard location. But this project is meant to solve that problem of space consumption and even serve itβs double purpose that is ability to guide towards the location of the department during the day as well as night, provided its power source remains constantly available. As the shortcoming of the existing signboard in the department do not serve that double purpose.
1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The aim of the signboard is to direct and guide the location of mechanical Engineering Department to the newly admitted student, to the department and other strangers.
The objectives are:
1. It will solve the problem of confusion in the classification of mechanical engineering department and the social sciences department.
2. It will also minimize the embarrassment given to strangers or new personnel who try to ask question about the department location.
3. Smaller in size of this project serves as an accomplishment of its objectives to minimized space consumption at the department where it will be mounted.
4. The simplicity of this sign board and its component i.e., itβs electrical powered system and features would enhance the overall decoration of the department.
