A solar cell or photovoltaic cell (previously) termed โSolar batteryโ is an electrical device that convert the energy of light directly into electricity by the photovoltaic effect, which is a physical and chemical phenomenon. in this paper research of different methods of fabricating solar cell are discussed suitability and the efficiency of each method are also studied and it was discovered that, the most widely used method for fabricating solar cell are the silicon based method followed by the thin film based methods. The efficiencies of these methods are still not fully achieved and therefore, various measures have going on to improve their efficiencies.
CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
A solar cell, or photovoltaic cell (previously) termed โsolar batteryโ) is an electrical device that converts the energy of lights directly into electricity by the photovoltaic effect, which is a physical and chemical phenomenon. It is a form of photoelectric cell, defined as a device whose electrical characteristics such as current voltage or resistance, vary when exposed to light.
Solar cells are the building blocks of photovoltaic modules otherwise known as solar panels (S.C. Riha2009) Solar cell are described as being photovoltaic irrespective of whether the source is sunlight or an artificial light. They are used as photo detector (for example infrared detectors), detecting light or other electromagnetic radiation near the visible range, or measuring light intensity. The operation of a photovoltaic (PV) cell requires three basic attributes:
- The absorption of light, generating either electron โ hole pairs or excitons
- The separation of charge carries of opposite types
- The separate extraction of those carriers to an external circuit
In contrast a solar thermal collector supplies heat by absorbing sunlight for the purpose of either direct heating or indirect electrical power generation from heat. A โPhoto electrolytic Cellโ (Photo electro chemical cell) on the other hand, refers either to a type photovoltaic cell (like that developed by Edmond Becquerel and modern dye-sensitized Solar Cells), or to a device that splits water directly into hydrogen and oxygen using only Solar illumination. (Riha et al., 2009).
Statement of the Problem
The challenges face by the limited methods of fabricating solar cells are in the physics laboratory prompt the request for the fabrication. However, the fabrication is aimed for suitability and durability and portability when handling.
Aim
The aim of this research is to compare the different methods of solar cells.
Objectives
The objectives of this research are;
To fabricate the solar cells
To compare the different methods of solar cells
Scope of the Study
The research work is limited to the fabrication of different methods of fabricating solar cells.
Justification
Technical institutions are known by their virtue of impacting quality practical knowledge to their students through practical works which is aided by the presence of practical facilities. Inadequate or lacks in these facilities presents a situation where poor practical knowledge is delivered to the students there by damaging the image of the course they represent.
The presence of comparative study of different methods of fabricating solar cells among other practical facilities in the physics laboratory will help to prevent such situations. Also, understanding the methods principle of comparative study of different methods of fabricating solar cells and its area of application is an added knowledge.
