APPENDICES.
The study examines the causes and effect of occupational mobility among office professionals using four selected organizations in Kaduna Metropolis as a survey. The theoretical basis for the study was done through the review of related literature from textbooks, journals, periodic, conference papers, Internet, etc. The entire population of 85 respondents was used for the study in view of the small size involved.
A set of questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Data were analysed using mean statistical tool of the Four Point Likert Scale. The findings of the study revealed thatthere is high rate of occupational mobility among office professionals and it is prevalent among the less educated such as the high-school and diploma holders, as well as when there is change in technology.
Thus the study recommends among others that organizationsshould ensure that they make office professionals to feel secured with their job by giving them permanent appointments rather than contract engagement as well as making deliberate provision to give recognition to the contribution of office professionals to the organization such as awards and accelerated promotions.
1.1 Background of the Study
Every business organization need efficient management and administration and therefore requires the services of office professionalsalso known as office managers or secretaries who besides possessing varied technical skills are also knowledgeable in management and organizational techniques such that their services are required in almost all organization.
Despite the importance of office professionalsto business organization however, it has been noted thatmany office professionals tend to change from one occupation to another thus suggesting a lack of job satisfaction. According to Kambourov and Manovskii (2008) unemployment rate in the developing countries has been one of the main causes of occupational mobility.
Occupational mobility is defined byKambourov and Marovskii(2009) as the movement of an occupational group itself, or of an individual member of an occupation, or of an occupational vacancy, through the stratification system of social space.
It is also the movement of an individual from one occupation to another. Office professional who is also addressed as secretary, executive assistant, office technicianamong others tend sometimes to move from one occupation to the other which sometime may not even be the field they are trained for.
It can be argued that globalization has caused a rise in employment flexibility in all Organizations for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries over the past few decades (Castells, 2011).
Company and organizational restructuring which are stimulated by the globalization process and the associated shift in bargaining power between capital and labour are at the core of the macro changes in the labour market. These transformations may also have paved the way for office professionalsβ flexibility.
The progress of science and technology has caused vast changes worldwide during the last 20 years. The development of information technology, globalization of economy, increase of servicesβ share in the structure of gross domestic product hereinafter called (GDP), development of knowledge-based sector of national economy have brought forward new requirements in areas like human resource development that have either rendered some professionals irrelevant including office professionalsor necessitating further development to be relevant or move to other fields completely.
