BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

A major concern of Nigeria as a nation today is how to build a responsible citizen as well as the good Samaritan citizens. This concern is particularly crucial in view of the fact that the society survival is seriously threatened by all sort of social problems/vices like bribery and corruption, prostitution and pre-marital sexual behaviours, drug abuse and drug trafficking militant and suicide bombing, religious fanatics and intolerance, ethnic particularize, political crises and the grey to mention but just a few,

Based on the above situation of aligencial as a nation a great deal of concern has been shown by Nigerian educators but most especially social studies educator s on education for citizenship.

Social studies has been seen as a field of study dealing with the integration of knowledge purpose of citizenship education.

Based on the assertion above the federal government par excellence for effective socialization for an effective national development therefore educators, most especially social studies teachers,Β  deem it fit that education for citizenship is needed to produce better Nigerians social studies as a school subject is of relevance to the achievement of this great national objectives. It and also be pointed out that social studies continents century around citizenship education.

The researchers is of the view that since other school subjects have been tried but did not give a satisfactory result in providing desirable education for citizenship social studies which is shouldered with the responsibility of citizenship education as its main goal, is therefore of direct relevance to citizenship education.

The relevance of social studies to citizenship education could be viewed from the fact that citizenship education is the process of making individual to contribute to decisionmaking for the progress of oneself community in particular and the nation is general.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The researcher, in an attempt to discover view the relevance of social studies to citizenship education in Nigeria, particularly in kaiama local government of kwara state, has comes to understand that β€œeducation for citizenship education has been part and parcel for the citizens to imbide the acceptable values, beliefs attitudes aspiration etc.

social studies is an interdisciplinary subject, must be implemented to support the newly introduced civic education te right educator in order for the citizens to behave and perform in an acceptable and desirable manner wherever the find themselves.

It could however be pointed out that through social studies has an integrated subjects is out to achieve citizenship as its goal but this situation has been affected or hindered due to some basic short commas/problem to social stueis this problem is referred to as what I Jemilat (2008) calls β€œmindlessness” i.e lack of thoughts about purpose, techniques content organization to fulfill or alter the set purpose/goals.

These problems in the part of social studies that is responsible for citizenship education or behavior modification has statistical significant relationship with the contemporary anti-social behaviors that are being exhibited in the society.

Social studies as a custodian and transmitter of our indigenous/traditional values, norms and culture has introduced various foreign or western values norms and culture into its contents with the name of socialization and social change this has much side effect on our social behavior and human personality in the society.

The diversity of the culture and human nature in the society has hindered social studies to attain its aims and objectives in totality in the aspect of citizenship education.

Therefore, the concern of this research is to evaluate the relevance of social studies to citizenship education, in Kaiama local government of Kwara state in particular as well as in Nigeria as a nation.

purpose of the study

the main purpose of this research work is to view and evaluate the relevance of social studies as a subject/course to citizenship education as the values of social, in Kwara local government of Kwara state.

This study will also examine the following objectives.

  1. Determine the relationship between social studies and citizenship education in the society
  2. High light the /needs of citizenship education in Nigeria as nation
  • To high light the philosophy behind the introduction of social studies in to the school curriculum in Nigeria.

The study will help to investigate the view and ideas of some early education/Β  research on the topic or related topic of discussion, in their various perspective or opinion based on their field of specialization

By and large , this study will enable the research to present her personal perspective and recommendation on the relevance of social studies to citizenship education in a given society beyond the reach of many readers (wider world)

research question/hypothesis

the research question to be considered in this study include

  1. is thereΒ  significant relationship between social studies and citizenship education of a given society?
  2. Does the nature of citizenship education determine the scope and contents of social studies in society?
  3. Does social studies contributes to the development of citizenship education in kaiama local government area of kwara state?
  4. Is there a statistical significant difference between social studies a field of study and citizenship education as a social value in kaiama local government area?
  5. Does social studies in any way have some significant negative effects on citizenship education in kaiama local government area?

significant of this study

this research work is intended to provide information on the relevance of social studies government area of kwara state as a society in Nigeria the study will help the government and individual or group to see social studies as a virtual course/instrument for societal and national development.

The study will help the society in identifying some basic short comings/problems of social studies will some possible recommendations in terms of achievement of the set of goals and objective.

The research work will bring beyond the reach of many readers/wider world the concepts and scope of social studies as well as that of citizenship education.

The study will enable the researcher to evaluate the various perceptions of the early education on the subject matter under discussion which will buttress the validation and reliability of the research work.

THE SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This research works study is paying attention to the relevance of social studies to citizenship education in Nigeria, mostly in Kaiama local government area of Kwara state.

The researcher has carefully observed all the problems in terms of time and financial matters in a short time before writing or embarking the research work the researcher has therefore limited her research work to the local government area this will enable the researcher to easily and simply distribute, collect and analyses the data and information for positive result/ and come of the study
