Every society (civilized or “uncivilized’) have its own form of education and health care provisioning for its people by way of social responsibility obligation. The duo societal variables (education and healthcare) are determined by environmental conditions and are aimed at achieving particular objectives. Similarly, the various linguistic groups inhabiting the Tiv Division also had their traditional ways of providing for the health and educational needs of their peoples before the interjection of colonialism.
Colonialism brought along with it Christianity whose impact in the area of education and health have tremendous consequences on the colonized communities. Particularly, education and health are two important social variables for mobilization and self assertion in all spheres of life which are provided by the governing authorities.
Therefore, it becomes imperative to inquire into the inner most motive(s) which precipitated the introduction of Western education and medicine by the Dutch Reform Church Mission (DRCM) from South Africa with such vigor and enthusiasm more than the British colonial authorities.
Was it for the mental development of the colonized communities in order to address the challenges of their future development or what? Another important concern is to examine the quality and quantity of especially education that was introduced by the DRCM which may suggest the purpose for which it was meant to serve.
Closely related to the above is the powerful influence of Western education and medicine to have so vitiated the African traditional religion and culture to only its vestiges in most part of Africa and the area of study inclusive. The question is, was this cultural adulteration and erosion of traditional values imposed or willingly accepted out of conviction? It is these questions and many others that this research work would probe into.

CHAPTER ONE
The Historical Geography of the Tiv Division of Benue Province
1.0Â Introduction
The Tiv Division otherwise known as the Munshi 1 Division of the old Benue Province was a large geographical entity created by the British colonial administration. A study of the detailed historical geography of the area is desirable but in this chapter only a brief history of the geography of the area shall be discussed.
Similarly, the components of this chapter shall include the peopling of the area, the traditional religion of the dominant people of the Tiv Division and their socio-political organization. Various tribal communities inhabited the Tiv Division, but as the name implied, it was predominated by the Tiv tribe. Therefore, the study shall concentrate on the most dominant group as the study of all the component groups shall make volumes and beyond the scope of this work
LOCATION AND PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY OF THE AREA
Tiv Division occupied an area equal to 9.8861 square miles and lies roughly between 60 30 to 80 to 100 east respectively.2 The Tiv Division lies within the vegetation belt of the guinea savannah region. These consist mainly of relic rain forest in derived guinea savannah to the south and the rain fall outline on stream banks in the savannah to the north. Soils becomes less sandy generally and more fertile nearer to the Benue and Katsina Ala Rivers.
Temperature averages between 40 and 60 inches and its intensity decrease northwards of the country. Rain starts in March and ends in October/November. The terrain is more open and may be classed as savannah or bushy. The word bush sometimes refers to the trees which are stunted and twisted by the annual burning of the grass3.
