The theoretical basis for the study was done through the review of related literature from textbooks, journals, periodic, conference papers, Internet, etc types of computer assisted instruction, importance of computer assisted instructions, how computer assisted instruction affect students and lecturers and the problems of computer assisted instructions.

The population of the study was 458 comprising the students and lecturers in the department under study. 20% (i.e. 94) was used as sample size. A set of questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Data were analyzed using mean statistical tool of the Four Point Likert Scale.

The findings of the study revealed that computer assisted instruction has positive impact on the performance of students and lecturers as it gives opportunity for students and lecturers who are absent to practice on their own pace.

Thus, the study recommends among others that management of institution should embrace the use of computer assisted instruction in teaching and learning by providing necessary computer facilities that will aid students as well as lecturers and likewise, lecturers should be training on the use of computer assisted instruction to enhance their performance in teaching and learning.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Technology has been an indispensable tool in today’s day to day activities ranging from learning, teaching, entertainment, leisure etc. Today, the increased importance of technology in every facet of life and the need to increase the success in education cleared the way for using technological facilities in the field of education.

According to Kriek and Stols (2010), technology can be used to strengthen students learning. Bester and Brand (2013) state that students as well as lecturers can explore new information, construct new knowledge and link theories into practice with the help of technology.

The changes that happen together with the rapid development of computers in recent years resulted in the use of computers in order to increase the quality of teaching and learning activities. In this way, computer based teaching approach has appeared.

Computer based teaching approach is an approach in which computers are used as teaching instruments and a teaching method with the computers in which learning is actualized by self-learning (BakiandGuveli, 2008). Computer based teaching can also be defined as a teaching approach in which the computer technologies and self-learning principles are combined (YildizandAktas, 2015).

However, academic performance is the translation of the student’s achievement in examinations or tests into scores obtained in a cognitive test (Anene, 2015). Academic performance refers to achievement in a school subject as designated by a score or mark obtained in a test or examination. Artherton (2003), maintains that academic performance is dependent on several factors like teaching methods, intelligence, background, organization, opportunity and motivation.

In view of the above, performance is refers to as academic achievement of the students that can be measured in terms of scores obtained in their institutional assessment or examination bodies such as Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN), Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM)etc, which conduct series of professional examinations for the various states.

Studies shows that both lecturers and students stand to benefit from the use of Computer Assisted Instructions (CAI) at all level as it helps them to widen their knowledge on a particular course at any given hour of the day (Brewer, 2013).

Office technology and management study is a course that relied heavily on the use of technology as a major way of equipping the students with skills required in today’s offices. As such lecturers taking these students are expected to be well equippedwith modern methods of teaching in order to meet the trend in todays teaching.

According to Nwoji (2003), lecturers prefer to use the conventional methods instead of the modern information, communication and technology approach like the computer assisted instructional method in teaching.

The Federal Ministry of Education (2007) suggested that teachers as well as lecturers should be encouraged to use a variety of instructional resources, like audio tapes, video tapes, films, projectors, computers among others to teach their subjects. In view of this, the topic seeks to determine the impact of computer assisted instructions on the performance of students and lecturers of Office Technology and Management of Kaduna Polytechnic.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Many teaching methods have been used in the past for lecturing. These approaches include, lecture method, demonstration method, questioning techniques, discussion methods which are expository in nature.

Expository methods according to Nwokenna (2010) consist of the presentation of concepts, facts and principles by the lecturers while the students are merely asked to listen and take notes. These facts and principles are drawn from text books based on the stipulated contents and cognitive levels within the unit of instruction.

The foregoing presents a picture of the use of poor teaching methods which may not improve the performance of students’ academic pursuit (Nwokenna, 2010). The above scenario tends to suggest that the conventional teaching methods used have accounted for the persistent poor performance of some students and lecturers.
