CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Relationship serves as a motivator towards students’ learning. They learn better when they have no fear of being intimidated by any lecturer and this aids their performance. Most students feel discouraged when their teachers are too hard on them. Some teachers do not see anything good in their students.

This demoralizes the students. When a student is dull and the teacher tries to create a good relationship, he/she feels the teacher is not giving up on him or her. It is discovered that when a student hates or dislikes a teacher, he tends to fail the subject, which will lead to poor performance. Therefore, there is a need for a relationship between students and lecturers.

Human relations can be described as a way people behave or act towards each other in any situation. Relationship is something that is supposed to be in existence between students and teachers in every institution. In one way or the other, they come in contact with one another either in or outside the class. This relationship can affect the performance of student positively or negatively. This study deals with human relation, psychology, sociology, morale e.t.c.

Psychology can be seen as study of people in order to discover how and why they behave in the way they do. This differentiate individuals in their behaviors, abilities, interest etc. when the students and teachers have the knowledge of this, it will help them to be able to relate and understand each other better. Psychology can also be described as two or more person who are interacting in such a manner that each person influences and is influenced by each other person”. David Olson (2010)

Morale refers to the state of spirit of an individual or group as shown by confident, cheerfulness, discipline and willingness to perform assigned task. .when the morale of a student is boosted, it reflects positively in his or her performance.
