ABSTRACT
The study was conducted to determine the effect of students/lecturers relationship on academic performance in Office Technology and Management, Kaduna Polytechnic. The theoretical basis for the study was done through the review of related literature from textbooks, journals, periodic, conference papers and internet.
The population of the study was 433 and 44was sampled out comprising of the students and lecturers of the Department under study using Roscoe 10% rule of Tumb. A set of questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. 44 questionnaires were administered and only 38 were retrieved and this was used for the analysis.
Data were analyzed using frequency distribution table and mean statistics. It was discovered that students/lecturers relationship has effect on academic performance of students as early and future academic outcomes of students are negatively affected by poor students/lecturer relationship.
The study recommends among others that students should ask questions about their lecturers during their introductory class and subsequent classes so as to know some things about their lecturers. Likewise, lecturers should be able to know personal things about each students to allow cordial relationship among others.
CHAPTER ONE
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Higher education is nowadays viewed as business-like enterprise, where the student as a consumer seeks a business-like relationship with the producer (lecturer) that delivers knowledge, skills and competencies he or she wants (Newton, 2002). In effect, to be able to fulfil their educational, research and informational functions in the 21st Century, tertiary institutions need to recognize the importanceof this emerging issue of lecturer/students relationship (World Bank, 2002).
Human relations can be described as a way people behave or act towards each other in any situation. Relationship is something that is supposed to be in existence between students and lecturers in every institution. In one way or the other, they come in contact with one another either in or outside the class. This relationship can affect the performance of student positively or negatively. This study deals with human relation, psychology, sociology, morale e.t.c.
Lecturer-student relationship is viewed as a helping hand in which the student perceives that the lecturer has his or her best interest at heart. This usually averts student negative feelings towards the campus thus the student persists in the polytechnic (Chepchieng, Stephen, Mbugua and Kariuki, 2006).
Moreover, studies on college impact on students clearly demonstrate that students’ interpersonal environment, which include interactions with peers and lecturers have the greatest impact on students’ changes in their aspirations, values, attitudes, beliefs and actions (Whitt,Edison,Pascarella,Terenzini. 2010; Chepchieng, 2004).
In fact, the norms, values, attitudes and ethics that tertiary institutions impart to students, either formally or informally are the foundations of the social capital, necessary for cohesive cultures; the very bedrock of good governance and democratic political systems (World Bank, 2002).
Perhaps, this is because when there is appropriate lecturer-student relationship that facilitates both formal and informal interactions, the polytechnic lecturer would transmit more than just knowledge and skills of his or her discipline (Ngara, 2009).
According to researchers, there is a general belief that human behaviour and actions are influenced by attitudes, whereby attitudes are seen as the cause and behaviour as the effect (Chepchieng, 2004). This implies that if students perceive lecturer-student relationship or interaction as irrelevant to them, they may develop a negative attitude towards the campus environment.
This is because interactions between students and campus characteristics that include interactions with their lecturers affect students’ physical behaviour, their cognitive filtering of what they are experiencing and in the affective domain, their perceptions and attitudes toward campus environment (Williams, 2006).
Therefore, since there is a general belief that human behaviour and actions are influenced by attitudes, there is need for a systematic empirical study to establish the effect of student lecturer relationship on academic performance in office technology and management, Kaduna Polytechnic.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The relationship between students and lecturers cannot be over-emphasized. Directly or indirectly a relationship is being created between them whether cordial or not. It is assumed that this relationship has a way of affecting the performance of students. Despite this assumption, not much has been done by way of assessing or improving this relationship and its importance.
