ABSTRACT

This research work examined the effect of scouring on vat dye absorption of 100% cotton fabric. In the practical work, the researchers desized grey fabric using diastase and then share the fabric into two equal part, one of them was scoured with five percent concentration of sodium hydroxide and the other part was dyed with vat dye (Cibracron Green) under the same concentration.

Four test were carried out on the dyed fabric i.e. washing fastness, rubbing fastness, light fastness and floatation test. The results of these test showed that the scoured fabric has better fastness grading and aesthetic appearance than the desized fabric and also possessed better absorbance of both water and dye It was discovered that scoured fabric will need little amount of dye to produce a better shade due to the fact that the fabric possessed on impeding impurity to dye absorption and leveling.

INTRODUCTION

1.1Β  Background of the Study

Fabrics made of native cellulose fibers contain impurities that have to be removed through a number of processes prior to dyeing. One of the important steps is scouring, in which the complete or partial non-cellulosic components found in cotton are removed, as well as impurities such as machinery and size lubricants (Madaras, 1993;Bae, 1997).

Scouring gives superior wettability to the fabrics for successful bleaching and dyeing (McCaffery et al., 1997). Nowadays, highly alkaline chemicals, such as sodium hydroxide, are usually used for scouring in textile finishing production. These chemicals not only remove the impurities, but also attack the cellulose, leading to a reduction in strength, fabric weight loss(krassig, 1992).

Furthermore, the resulting waste-water has a high COD (chemical oxygen demand), BOD (biological oxygen demand) and salt content. However, textile producers today have the possibility of applying a new, effective alternative to chemical scouring, with the enzyme and various other combined processes such as scouring and bleaching (Burget et al,1994:Buschle-Diller et al., 2001).
