CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The teacher is becoming the focus of attention in our world today. It is becoming increasingly clear that no nation can rise above the quality of its teachers. If we seek explanation for the rise of and fall of any nation, we would have to among other places, turn to the schools and examine the caliber of their teachers.

According to Haddenfield and Stinnet (1981) “what the teacher knows can make differences (while) what he does not know can be an irreparable loss”. Razile, (1988) affirms this when he says “the validity of an educational system naturally is dependent upon the quality of teaching and availability of competent teachers.

It is therefore not surprising that both developed and developing countries of the world are today asking questions about the quality of their teachers. The academic qualification of a teacher does not only prepare him to acquire necessary basic skills, knowledge and technical competence, but also enable him to be more productive. Some of the causes of poor performance of students in mathematics and science subjects could be directly attributed to poor quality of teachers.

According to Griffiths & Hoeson (1974) “the potential of an educational system is related to the ability of its teachers, hence the more qualified and better trained teachers are the easier its effect on curriculum development.

It is a common belief that mathematics is a difficult subject and this has made some of the students who could have been good in mathematics to run away from the subject. The recognition of the important science relationship between students.

Performance in mathematics at SSCE and the teachers’ qualification over a period of three years in Kaduna North secondary schools.
