INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Acquiring information resources in care activities of polytechnic library all over still acquired and maintains massive book collections while managing other formats. Despite prophecies of vanishing print collections and emergence of the digital paradigm print books still have a central role in library collection and publishing industries.
Acquisition generally applies to the function of obtaining the library materials which make up a collection. Acquisition function seek to discover what materials exist that might fulfill the objectives to select and order those best suit to the library purpose that have not yet been acquired to receive shipment and to claim all materials that fail to arrive.
After books are selected they have to be secured by the library through the process commonly termed as Acquisition work this means the process of procuring materials it involves who and where the materials are going to be purchase. Acquiring or Acquisition of information resources involves all the procedure employed to bring to the library all needed print and none print resources to satisfy the broad of the library. Library materials can be acquired through:
Purchase
Gift
Exchange
Legal deposit
Whatever the method of acquisition library materials should be relevant to the need of the users.
1.1Â STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
There is a need to explore the basic issues in the acquisition of library materials. The study explores these issues with reference to major polytechnic libraries in Nigeria using Nuhu Bamali library of Kaduna state polytechnic as case study.
The issue of lack proper channel and resources of acquisition in acquiring library materials is stipulated channel through which a library is supposed to follow while acquiring this materials and failure to do so make acquisition of library materials difficulties. There is also problem of appropriate procedures or steps to follow in acquisition library materials. This is a major problem in acquisition.
Financial constrain is another problem of acquisition. Nuhu Bamali library faces difficulties I purchasing materials because of insufficiency of money. Since library is not money generating organization financing it budget in a big problem in Nuhu Bamali polytechnic. The acquisition department itself has some challenges.
Difficulties in carrying out it functions this problems averse raising from the fact that 80% book in the library are purchase from Europe and America. It is necessary to understand the major functions of the acquisition department of Nuhu Bamali library so as to facilitate current books or materials in the library.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The objectives behind the conduct of this research work are:
To ascertain the various channels and sources of acquisition in polytechnic libraries.
To determine the procedures or stages of acquisition in academic library.
To find out the important of financed in acquisition of library materials.
To know the major problem faced by the acquisition department of the academic library.
To find out the function of acquisition department in polytechnic libraries.

The study will help to improve the level of book acquisition in polytechnic libraries it will serve as an eye opener to acquisition librarian to know the problems facing acquisition. It will also enable academic libraries know the prevailing strategies of book acquisition in acquisition of library materials there are speculated strategy in acquiring library material if  well followed will improve the collection available in the library.
1.5 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The scope for the study is a survey on book acquisition in the polytechnic libraries using Nuhu Bamali polytechnic library of Kaduna state. The limitations are lack of fund and transportation difficulties.
1.6 DEFINATION OF TERM
ACQUISITION: This mean the process of procuring materials it involves who and where the materials are going to be purchase.
LIBRARY MATERIALS: This refers to collection find in the library. They can be print and non-print materials.
ACADEMIC LIBRARIES: These are library established in institution of higher learning with primary aim of enhancing the teaching and research objective of the parent body.
FINANCE: Finance this means is a board term that describes two related activities: the study of how money is managed and the actual process of acquiring needed funds. Because individual, business and government entities all need funding to operate, the field is often separated into three sub – categories :
Personal finance
Corporate finance
Public finance
LEGAL DEPOSIT: Legal deposit simple refers to the requirement that a person or group submit copies of their publications to a repository, usually a library. The requirement is mostly limited to books and periodicals.
