INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Solar energy is used as an efficient energy source in modern days. Solar panels are used to convert solar energy into electricity to power house lighting, appliances etc. solar panels are selected on the basis of a house needs and also depending upon the position of the sun and weather condition. When a house used solar panels to derive energy from the sun, it is measured in kwh. In this system kwh refers to the amount of energy that is produced is represented as kwh per square meter of the surface of solar panels. The amount of energy generated by a system entirely depends upon the amount of solar rays that reached the solar panel. (Norton, 2013).

Solar energy is measured by using different parameters, such as intensity of light, voltage, current and the temperature. Different components are used to measure these parameters of the solar cells. The intensity of the light is measured by using an LDR sensor (Light dependent resistor), voltage is measured by using voltage divider, current is measured by using a current sensor and temperature by using a temperature sensor. The sensors that are used to measure different parameters for calculating solar energy are regulated by a PLC microcontroller (programmable interface controllers) which has an inbuilt multi-channel ADC (Application delivery controller).

The energy output of solar panels is greatly affected by factors such as shading and temperature. If a small portion of the solar panels is shaded and the rest is exposed to sunlight, it decreases the efficiency of the solar panel greatly. Similarly, high temperature reduces the efficiency of the solar panel system greatly. To avoid this wastage of energy sensors are attached to the system to make an efficient use of energy. (abcd, 2011)

There are two types of solar energy measurement, based on the type of energy photovoltaic energy produces electricity, and solar thermal heats water. The energy output is expressed by the amount of solar radiation that reaches the absorbent surface be it a solar panel or solar collector. The measurement of solar radiation is based on a rate of kilowatts per square meter, represented as W/m2. (National R. 2006).

The measurement standard for scientific data, designed for generating a direct for estimate of solar energy mainly, how much sunlight is hitting a particular part of the earth at any given production via solar panels and another photovoltaic equipment is calculated in kilowatt hours per square meter or kwwm2 designed to represent the amount of energy being generated by the sunlight. (National R. 2006).

1.2     JUSTIFICATION

At the current time, electricity generation using concentrated solar radiation (known as CSR) is evolving towards lower costs through more efficient conversion system and cheaper component with longer life.

1.3 LIMITATION AND SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This project research is limited to measurement of solar energy system. It gives information about our world with which to make informed decisions. For example, insulation tables can help people in different areas decided whether solar panels are on appropriate alternative energy source.

If there is not enough solar radiation, they may opt instead for wind power such data may be useful when it comes to deciding how much sun screen to wear, or for physicians looking to study rates of skin cancer in relation to rates of solar radiation exposure.

1.4 AIM

Measurement of solar energy system.

1.5 OBJECTIVES

To measure solar energy be using different parameters such as intensity of light, voltage, current and temperature.
