CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

A Party according to Wikipedia encyclopedia is a gathering of people who have been invited by a host for the purpose of socialization, conversation and recreation.

Party as a gathering require  one to come out with a nice look which is enhance by what we put on as our clothing  and the clothing are generally regarded as party wear. Party wear is a wear worn especially for a party. Different types of party such as Children’s party, Cocktail party, and Garden party and Costume party would tend to require different styles of dress. Party wears can vary from one another in terms of silhouette, design material, depending on the type of party; it could be a wedding, cocktail, birthday, and garden or dinner party.

Party when looked at in Nigeria scene is a borrowed culture which also make the dressing to this gathering conform with borrowed culture, it is noticed that in most parties the attendant mostly put on ready-made attires made with foreign fabric and having a foreign look.

Therefore it is clearly observed that if this should continue there is every tendency that coming up generation of Nigeria will never come up to know and make use of printed fabric for party attires, as a result of this observation, there is need to encourage the use of printed fabric which speaks more of our cultural heritage and our sense of pride as Nigerians.

The researcher has come up with the idea of producing a children party wear using printed fabric by the screen printing method. Screen printing is a technique that uses a woven mesh to support an ink blocking stencil to receive a desire image. The attached stencil forms open areas of mesh that transfer ink or other printable materials which can be pressed through the mesh as a sharp-edge image on to a substrate.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

It has been observed that Most Nigerians prefer foreign garment (attire) more than the locally made garment for parties. This party wear do not suit the Nigerian environment therefore result to. Excessive importation of fabric which is affecting the economy of Nigeria. Lost of our cultural identity. Poor patronage of printed fabric attires leading to the closing down of our local industries. Devalue and defame the printed fabrics in Nigeria. More so children attend parties but Nigerian fashion designers do not pay attention to production of party wears.

1.3     Purpose of the Study

The under listed points explained the purpose of this study

(a)     To produce children party wears using screen printed fabric.

(b)     To encourage the production of different screen printed fabric.

(c)      To create awareness that screen printed fabric can be used to produce nice party wears.

(d)     To create more jobs opportunities for screen printers and party fashion designers that specialize in garment.

(e)      To help upgrade and standardize Nigerian product.

 

 

1.4     Significance of the Study

The finding of this study is of great significance to the fashion industry. Nigeria fashion designer will be more creative and curious in show casing children party wears made with printed fabric using screen printing method. It will serve in executing research and development in various fields of dressing.

It will make the fashion industry more involve in the production of party wears using screen printed fabric. Garment, when completed will add to the academic literature in the fashion profession and also academic research bank in the department library. It will also arise the inner potential in people which have not been exploited in this work.

1.5 Research Questions

(a)     How will Nigerian children party wear garment made of screen printed fabric?

(b)     How will children party wears made of screen printed fabric be accepted?

(c)      How will the use of screen printed fabric create more jobs for screen printers?

(d)     How will the product be durable?

1.6  Scope of the study

This production is basically concern with the production of children party wear using screen printed fabric. It tries to access the impact screen printed fabric has on party wears. Also to ascertain the attitude and interest of Nigerians toward party wears made of screen printed fabrics.

1.7     Limitation of the study

The researcher faced some challenges during the administration and collection of instrument, inadequate book, journals during research study.

1.8 Definition of terms

(a) Party: is a gathering of people who have been invited by a host for the purpose of socialization, conversation and recreation or is a social occasion offer in a person’s home at which people eat, drink, talk, dance and enjoy themselves.

(b) Party wear: A party wear is a dress worn especially for a party. Different types of party such as children’s party, cocktail party, garden party and costume party would tend to require different styles of dress.

(c)  Production: is the act or process of making goods to satisfy the people need.

(d) Design: is a plan produced to show the look and function or working of a garment or other object before it is used.

(e) Silhouette: A silhouette is the image of a person, animal, object or scene represented as a solid shape of a single colour, usually black, it edges matching the outline of the subject.

(f)  Socialization: is a process whereby children acquire knowledge through interacting with the environment.

(g) Recreation: refers to things or activities done at leisure time for enjoyment.

(h) Conversation: is a form of interactive spontaneous communication between two or more people.

(i)  Cocktail: refer to any beverage that contains two or more ingredient if at least one of them contains alcohol.

(j)      Costume: At a masquerade ball, guest wear masks conceal their identities. Guest at a costume party or a fancy party wears costumes.
