CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Construction design is product of change in the society that encompasses assembling of part to make a whole. Thus the construction process start from the process of developing a public or private infrastructure or site from planning, Architectural work, The quantity surveying, landscaping to the actual mixing of concrete and cement, and to the finishing.(Galadanchi,2010)
The quantity surveyor plays a key role in building and engineering projects, managing the cost from the early design stage through to the completion. His priorities are to ensure that project meet legal and quality standard; and that clients get good value for money, achieving a balance and logical distribution of available funds between the various part of the building, avoiding unnecessary allocation of fund to non functional areas and to keep total expenditure within the amount agreed by the client.(Seeley,2004)
Being in charge of financial matters carries with a great responsibility, and the Quantity Surveyor has the expertise to provide independent advice on these matters. The role of the Quantity Surveyor within the Nigerian construction environment is of great importance to both client and other industry professionals.
The Quantity Surveyor is trained to limit the client expenditure within the amount agreed i.e. the tender sum and final account should approximately equate with the budget estimate. This being the case, the services capacity of Quantity Surveying should be marked to prospective clients, which falls into three different categories. (Ashworth, 2010)
1. Clients who have a clear intention of their building requirement, but are generally unaware of the cost implications.
2. Clients who have a maximum amount of money to spend and have a project in mind but are unsure of exactly what that amount of money will purchase, and
3. Clients who know their building requirement and who also have a fixed sum of money to spend on project.
Regardless of what form of contract is used, at some stage in the projectβs procurement process, someone will need to quantify the extend of works to be undertaken for the purpose of:
1. Obtaining prices from several contractorβs or principal contractors for completing the works.
2. Valuing the extent of work and variation completed for the purpose of issuing payment to a contractor or principal contractor.
1.1 AIM
The aim of this project is to prepare a priced bill of quantities for a proposed four bedroom bungalow using traditional billing method.
1.2 OBJECTIVES
1. To prepare a working drawing of a proposed four bedroom bungalow.
2. To take off, abstract and prepare BOQs
3. To examine the methods involved in preparation of bill.
1.3 METHODOLOGY
The information provided in the project were obtained from text books, internet, journals, BOQs of the past projects and market survey was carried out in order to get prices of materials to build up rates for items of work.
1.4 SCOPE & LIMITATION
This work covers priced bill quantities of a proposed four bedroom bungalow using traditional billing method, which is located at Yantukwane, Kaduna, and the project work is limited to building works.
