CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
No doubt about the importance of fruits and vegetables (FV) as major components of health diets. Emphasis has been given to their intake in all dietary recommendation by authentic international nutritional agencies.
Recent epidemiological advances suggest that regular consumptions of adequate amounts help prevent major chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers (Dauchet et al., 2006). A global burden of disease project has estimated that there are 2.7 million deaths world wide (1.8% of global diseases burden) which can be attributed to inadequate consumption of FV.
If an individual intake of FV is increased, the global burden will be decreased by 31% of 1 schemic diseases, 19% for strokes, 19% for stomach cancer, 20% for colorectal cancers (Lock et al., 2005).
The general recommendation of intake of FANDV is at least 400 grams per person per day (five serving of 80g each day), or about 146 kg per person per year (23,24).
Similarly, national nutrition guidelines recommends average daily consumption of 300g for vegetables (portion size = 100gm x no of portions = 1) the vegetables include (green, leafy vegetables = 50gm, other vegetables = 200gm, roots and tubers = 50gm). (25) A glass of fruit juice (excluding sweetened beverages) counts towards a portion of fruit each day although whole fruits is encouraged for its fibre content in conjunction with active life style.
Because fruit and vegetable consumption affects multiple health out comes and is currently low across all states, continued efforts are needed to increase demand and consumption. (Hyderabad: National Institute of Nutrition 2011).
Improving fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption for adults might start with improving intake during childhood. During 2007 โ 2010, 60% of children consumed fewer cup equivalents of fruits than recommended and 93% consumed fewer vegetables than recommended. Better dietary practices in life where children learn can have an intergral role in improving intake.
For example school districts, schools, and early care and education providers can help increase childrenโs fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption by meeting or exceeding current federal nutrition standards for meals and snack, serving fruit and vegetables (FV) whenever food is offered, and training staff to make FV. (Food and agriculture organization of UN 2010).
In its 1982 report on diet and cancer, the national academy of science included guidelines emphasizing the importance of F and V in the diet. The value of adding citrus fruits, carotene-rich fruit and vegetables, and cruciferous vegetables to the diet for reducing the risk of cancer was specifically heightened.
In 1989, a National Academy of Science report on diet and health recommended consuming 5 or more servings of fruit and vegetable daily for reducing the risk of both cancer and hearth disease. The 5-a-Day wad developed as a tool to increase public awareness of the health benefits of known vitamins. Prevention is a more effection strategy than treatment of chronic disease.
According to the Lyon diet, heart study demonstrated that a โMediterranea dietโ (which is high of F and V substantially reduced the risk of incidence and mortality from nyocardial infarction (MI) when compared with low fat diet alone. A study carried out in the south India observed higher F and V intake explained 48% of protective effect it against CVD risk factors in the studied population. (S.A et al., 2003).
Globally, majority of people consistently are consuming less than the daily recommended F and D requirement. Even in development nations e.g Australia, Canada, Europe, UK and USA, researches have concluded that there is large gap between actual and recommended consumption of both F and V despite decades of cancer and publicity while resultant out comes were short โ lived. (Lock K., J., et al., 2005).
