CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

The topic Flexible Pavement Failure is generally phenomenom on all or most of our roads. The failure denote deformation and disintegration which bring about the collapse of the pavement layers. This problem will make or turned the road unsuitable for use because of the inability to carry the applied load from the traffic.

Normally, a road is design as a structure to adequately carry traffic loads without any deformation or breaking, if the roads deforms it is said to have structurally failed, many roads are failing as they hardly meet design life expectancy. Therefore, this research is an approach to find the root causes of structural failure on our roads and suggest possible remedies.

The case study at Unguwar Sunusi Bus-stoproad, Kaduna state. There are myriads of roads pavement failure which ranges from cracks, pot holes and deformation which reduce riding confort on this road. Some commercial vehicles(buses and taxis) from Kasuwar Barci road fly this road to Kaduna Polytechnic.

This particular road is flexible pavement design construction and as such, I have confined my finding to the flexible pavement. Generally speaking, a flexible road structure is composed of different layers and each layer has a special function.

These layers includes sub-grade, sub-base base and wearing surface is distributed by the surface base, sub-base and then to the sub-grade. It is necessary to defect some failures and reveal their causes and thus obtain information leading to an improved method of design, as realistically, failure here are two different types of  failure; structural and functional failure which are explain fully in the succeeding chapters.

Kaduna being the state capital and one of the development state in the country, a high volume of traffic movement from different daily activities is always expected, this bring about daily traffic movement from one destination to another industrial layout and commercial activities are also another factors which will bring continuous movement of the traffic (increasing the traffic volume on the road).

Due to the above consideration it becomes necessary for Kaduna town to have a good network. Good road work system is a fundamental institution in every society for development of the area, in term of education, social, political, agricultural, commercial and rapid communication system as well as many other things that requires movement from one place to another.

1.2    STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The problem associated with the failure of roads in Nigeria is the inability of following of the design criteria laid down for the construction of roads adequately, roads which are usually constructed to serve a long life span of twenty five years (for flexible pavement) hardly go beyond a life of ten years.

Therefore, it is with a view towards rectifying this abnormality of indiscriminate pavement failures that this project is under-taken to arrest the manifestation sign of pot-holes, cracking, stripping of road surface and proper drainage system on the designated road.

1.3 AIM

The aim of the project report which reference to the case study Unguwarsunusi Bus-stop road, is to investigate and analyze the causes, effect and find solutions to them in future.

Structural failure of the pavement in order to prevent future happenings so as to achieve good and effective communication towards the enhancement of both social and economical activities to minimize delays to the road users as to reduce both operating cost and maintenance cost which helps to reduce the rate of accidents.

1.4 OBJECTIVES

The objectives to be determined in this project topic is to sort out all the necessary aspect that are involve in pavement road construction. These objectives are;

1. The stability of the soil properties.

2. The natural moisture content of the soil.

3. The bearing capacity of the structural designs.

4. The quality control of the suitability of material.

1.5   PROJECT ORGANIZATION

The bulk of the project work consist of five chapters. The first chapter introduction, the second chapter deal with literature view, description pertaining road pavement, general distress on paved road and causes of pavement failure, chapter three consist of method used in obtaining survey data.

Soil analysis and the analysis of the obtained data chapter four includes description of the analysis stated above. The last chapter which is chapter five have recommendation, conclusion and references.
