ABSTRACT

A study on effect of socioeconomic status on academic achievements of students in selected secondary schools in Kaduna south local government area of Kaduna state was carried out. A simple random sampling technique was used to drawn a sample of 120 respondents comprising of 15 teachers and 105 students. Structured questionnaires was developed by the researcher and administered to the respondents. Mean was used to analyse the data.

The results revealed that students’ socioeconomic status influenced their academic achievements. The high socioeconomic status parents have taken active roles in their children’s education and development by using controlled, organized activities and fostering a sense of entitlement through encouraged discussion.

Families with low socioeconomic status do not participate in this movement, causing their children to have a sense of constraint. Thus, high socioeconomic status children have a greater sense of entitlement, more argumentative and better prepared for adult life.  The findings show positive and strong relationship between socioeconomic status and academic achievements of children.

This chapter is discussed under the following sub-headings:

Background of the study

Statement f the problem

Limitations o the study

1.1 Background of the study

Education is a process through which individual acquires skills, competencies and attitudes. It is the right of every child to be educated, be it traditional or western. Poverty is one militating factor against children from low socioeconomic status; it prevents them from carrying out this educational activity perfectly. (Feustel, 2007).

Socioeconomic status is an economic and sociological combined term. It is the total measures of a person’s work experience or a family’s economic and social position in relative to others, based on income, education and occupation.

When analyzing a family’s socioeconomic status, the household income, earner’s education and occupation are examined (Marmot and Micheal, 2004). Research has shown that variables such as culture, ethnicity and socioeconomic status have significant effects on children’s school success (Richardson, 2002).

The relationship between the socioeconomic status and academic achievements appears to be a global, cross cultural phenomenon. Research in Australia, America and also in African countries like Nigeria and Uganda have confirmed that socioeconomic status has an impact o academic achievement (Overton, et al., 2002).  According to Okiogba, (2013), children of parents with high socioeconomic status tend to express more “disengagement” behaviours” than their less fortunate peers.

Although the effect of quality of education and academic achievements have not been explored thoroughly, it seems reasonable to suggest that, sociopolitical history of  Nigeria and the fact that there is wide economic disparity and educational inequalities in this country, children of low socioeconomic status and/ or with low qualities of education will be at risk of performing more poorly than their high socioeconomic status/high quality of education counterparts on measures of general intellectual functioning and academic performance (Heyneman, 1996).

Various researches have been undertaken by educationist concerning the differences in students from a particular social class achieve better in classroom learning than the others? Socioeconomic status has influence on students life both in school and outside school, this has created awareness due t people’s knowledge of the existence of stratification in our society and its importance influence on opportunities in individual’s life.

This is because variables such as wealth, parental interest in school work of their children, aspiration for future success, and level of parent’s education and other related socioeconomic aspects of human life have been shown to have relationship with children’s academic achievements (Musgrave, 1997). Socioeconomic status of children is most commonly determined by combining parent’s educational level, occupational status and income level (Jeynes, 2002).

1.2 Statements of the problem

The background has shown that socioeconomic status has a significant effect on children’s school success (Richardson, 2002).

It has been observed that children from low socioeconomic status mostly remain backward in most of the areas of life and are slow in availing the benefits of the ongoing development process and they have to find the much coveted status guaranteed by the society under the name of equality of opportunity.

However this is not an easy task. The present study is an attempt to find out the effect of socioeconomic status of the family on the academic achievements of students in some selected senior secondary schools in Kaduna south local government area of kaduna state.

1.3 Significance of the study

This research work is intended and hoped to serve as a step towards identifying some of the factors militating against academic achievements of students as a result of the effect of their socioeconomic status.

The study will also be of use to educationists as well as teachers, resource centres, inspectors and supervisors in the Ministry of education as a guide for their future reference as it will encourage them to incorporate parents in planning for students, this is because the parents know the best environment under which students at home will learn and other variables which affect their performance.

1.4 Purpose of the study

The current study aims to identify the effect of socioeconomic status on academic achievement of students in senior secondary schools in Kaduna south local government area of Kaduna state. Specifically it intends to:

1. Determine the effects of parent’s income on their children’s academic achievements.

2. Identify the influence of parent’s educational level on children’s academic achievements.

3. Identify the impact of parental interest on children’s education.

1.5 Basic Assumptions

1. Low socioeconomic status children, regardless of which school they attend will perform more poorly than high socioeconomic status children on measures of academic achievements.

2. Children from parents with low educational level will perform poorly compared to their counterparts from parents with high educational level.

3. High socioeconomic status parents show more interest and involvement in their children’s school performance than low socioeconomic status parents and so their children will achieve better in terms of education.

1.6 Research Questions

1. What is the relationship between the parent’s income of children and their academic achievements?

2. How could parent educational level affect the children’s academic performance?

3. How does parent’s interest have effect on the children’s education and academic achievements?

1.7 Scope of the study

The current study is delimited to effects of socioeconomic status on academic achievements of students in selected secondary schools namely: Government Girls Secondary School Unguwan mu’azu,Government girls secondary school  Maimuna Gwarzo and Government Secondary School Kargi, in Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

1.8 Limitations of the study

The researcher experienced difficulties while administering the questionnaires to the respondents. Due to the poor understanding of English language of some of the students in the area of study, the questionnaires have to be translated into the local language to most of the respondents before responses were received.

Also some of the questionnaires were not completely responded despite the ample time given to the respondents and some of the questionnaires were ticked double under the same item.
