It has been observed that the western mode of dressing are mostly used by hotel waiters in Nigeria. Therefore there is need to have our cultural identity and self belonging. This project is aimed at design and production of uniforms for hotel waiters using Africa print and dyed fabric. It tries to ascertain the level of acceptability of hotel waiters uniform to reduce wastage of resources and to create job opportunities in Nigeria.
The production of hotel waiters uniform will help the waiters and the hotel to showcase their cultural identity to foreigners visiting the hotel. It will serve as reference point to student who will want to write on the related topic in the nearest future. The instrument used for collection of data was personal observation and questionnaire. The population and sample size was (200) two hundred questionnaire was design for hotels in Kaduna and was analyzed.
It was discovered that people appreciate the use of African print and dyed fabric for production of waiters uniform. Recommendation was drawn that awareness and enlightment of hotel owners and waiter on the use of Africa print as uniform. Student who will want to embark on this topic should focus on the use of high quality fabrics and locally made accessories for hotel waiters.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Back ground of the Study
According to Diaz (September, 2015), a uniform means a set of standard clothing worn by members of an organization while participating in that organization activity. A uniform is a special set of clothes which people, for example soldiers or the public, wear to work in and which children wear at school. (According to Collins English Dictionary, 2017).
According to English Dictionary a uniform is a particular set of clothes that has to be worn by the members of the same organization or group of people. The internal Revenue service (IRS) defines uniform as work clothes that are required and are not suitable for everyday use. Many businesses consider it important to ask their employees to wear uniforms.
Fortunately for workers like chefs, retail sale people and medical workers, business uniforms may be tax-deductible if the expense is not reimbursed. Asking employees to wear uniform in the colours associated with their company can go along way in establishing an impression in the mind of the consumer. Uniform identify workers as individual who are associated with a company and its produce. A uniform puts the force of the corporate reputation behind the individual making him look reliable and trust worthy as a company representative.
According to free Miriam-webster Dictionary A waiter is that person whose job is to serve customers with their offer in the hotel premises. A waiter could be a male or a female. A waiter waits at the table by the entrance and attend tocustomers needs.
Waiter uniform are uniforms specially designed for the hotel waiters for identification by the hotel customers.
Waiting staff are those who work at hotel attending to customer-supplying them with food and drink as requested. A waiting staff takes on very important role in a hotel which is always be sensitive and accommodating to the guest. Each waiter follows rule and guide lines that are developed by the manager.
Uniform can been seen as very importantto the hotel waiter because it gives them right and power of authority over their responsibilities in the hotel premises. It makes them look professional and that customers can identify the people wearing them as members of the staff. Uniforms allows customers to identify staff members according to their uniforms.
It was observed that in Nigeria today hotel business is growing at a very high rate which create opportunity to the fashion designers to promote the use our locally made fabrics but most of the experience for a hotel management staff and its patrons.
1.2 Statement of the problem
Fashion as it is said “is a popular styles or practice especially in clothing, Footwear, accessories, make up body or furniture”. Fashion is a distinctive and often habitual trend in the styles in which a person dresses, it is however pitiful and touching to find out that in Nigeria today most hotels do not know what the uniform of their waiters should look like, some of the hotel waiter wears garment that expose their body especially the female waiters.
Some of the hotel waiters are use as sex slave to attract customers, so they wear uniform that are transparent made from light fabric, most waiters uniform that are made from imported fabric and there are carelessly made by the designers without any sign of creativity or any sign of knowledge about fashion in them.
1.3 Aims and objectives of the study
1. To produce waiters uniforms for hotel waiters using African print and dyed fabric.
2. To promote decency of dress worn by waiters in the hotel.
3. To reduce the importation of foreign countries, fabric used for producing uniforms for hotel waiter.
4. To help the hotel management from depending on foreign countries fabrics.
5. To promote the use of dyed fabric, as it will help to promote the fashion designers to be more creative.
6. To produce new designers out of the ones used by Nigeria waiters at the hotel.
7. To see standard of how waiters cloths should look like.
1.4 Research Question
1. What are the attitude of people towards the use of African print and dyed fabric?
2. Does the African print and dye fabric meet the standard needs of customers?
3. Do people or managers at hotel patronize wears made from African print and dye fabric for their waiters?
4. To what extent is this research work going to orientate the fashion designers on the need of using dye fabric for garment/uniform production?
5. Of what value would the use of African print and dye fabric will be to hotel management if used in producing their waiters uniforms?
1.5 Significant of the study
This project will be of importance to the Nigeria government, fashion designers and to the hotel waiters, and hotel management. As it will help the fashion designers to be more creative in producing dresses that will be more acceptable by Nigerians, using African print and dyed fabric.
It will also help the hotel management from depending on foreign countries for fabrics. It will set standard of how waiters uniform should look like.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study speaks on uniform, but it is mostly on the design and production of waiters uniform for both male and female using Nigeria fabrics, to produce shirt, trouser, tie for male and hijab for female, .
1.7 Definition of Terms
- Client:-client is a person who is receiving the benefits, sewice, of a social welfareagency, a government bureau,etc.
- Fabric:-it is a material made by wearing or washing cotton or silk used for production of clothes. Fabric is made from cotton or silk.
- Guest:- Is a person who spend some time at another person’s house in some social activity, as a visit, dinner, or party. A person who receives the hospitality of a club, a city or the like.
- Hotel:- A hotel is an establishment that provide paid lodging on a short-term basis.
- Uniform:- uniform is a type of clothing worn by members of an organization while participating in that organization’s activity. It is also worn by school children.
- Waiter:- waiter is one who serve and attend to people.waiter can be defined as a person who waits on table of a hotel or restaurant to serve and attend to customers need in the hotel premises. It could be a male or a female.
- Waiting Staff:- waiting staff are those who work at hotel or restaurants, and sometimes in private homes, attending to customers supplying them with food and drinks as requested.
