Assessment Of Food Consumption Pattern Of Geriatrics In Nigeria

You can download this complete project materials on Assessment Of Food Consumption Pattern Of Geriatrics In Nigeria from chapter one to five

ABSTRACT

This project is aimed at examining the food consumption pattern of geriatrics in Tudun/Nupawa at Kaduna State and to find out whether their recommended daily intake is adequate or not. Data were obtained by administering questionnaires to 20 geriatrics in Tudun/Nupawa at Kaduna South, L.G.A of Kaduna state. A non probability sampling techniques was used in the selection of samples and analysis done using percentages.

Finding reveals that 30% of the respondent do not have occupation, 4% only completed tertiary education, above 50% of them were married, 30% were divorced and only 5% were widow, 30% of the respondents on bread & cereals intake was adequate, 10% of the respondent meat and meat product intake was found to be adequate, 20% do not consume milk, majority (65%) of the respondents appears to take fruit and vegetable adequately. Majority (65%) intake of sweet and oil was found to be adequate.

CHAPTER ONE

Background Of The Study

Introduction

Geriatrics or geriatric medicine is a specialty that focuses on health care of elderly people. It aims to promote health by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. (Geriatrics – Wikipedia).

Older people are vulnerable to malnutrition for many reasons including physiological and functional changes that occur with age, lack of financial support and inadequate access to food. The functional status of the elderly is their ability to carry out their day to day activities including preparation of food and intake, thereby affecting nutritional status.

The nutrition and health of the elderly is often neglected. Most nutritional intervention programs are directed toward infants, young children, adolescents, and pregnant and lactating mothers. However, nutritional interventions could play a part in the prevention of degenerative conditions of the elderly and an improvement of their quality to life.

A timely intervention can stop weight loss in those at risk of malnutrition. Unfortunately, not much explanation has been given for the precise estimate of under-nutrition in this age group in research. An evaluation of nutritional status is important for the creation of a database to assist with the initiation of important programs and formulation of policies. (Vellas, et al., 2006).

Most elderly people (60+) years are prone to the consumption of fatty and sugary foods because they are most affordable and tasty (canon, 2001). They are also vulnerable to abuse and neglect from family members and care givers (Steyn and Temple, 2008).

In Africa, especially in Nigeria (a capitalist society) old age was viewed as a handicap. The elderly in this society constitute the most vulnerable group, however, the least attention and concern are evidenced by the health care delivery personnel, the policy makers, researchers and their own families and relations. They are openly rejected by the majority especially their own immediate families and lose relatives. This seems to place an unfair and unnecessary burden on the elderly who have held important positions and made outstanding contributions to the development and welfare of this country (Hamilton, 2006).

The demographic transition from predominantly young to predominantly middle-aged or old populations is taking place and this epidemiological transition is changing the pattern of morbidity dominated by infectious diseases to chronic diseases and disabilities. Many of the diseases suffered by older persons are a result of dietary factors operating from infancy and physiological changes occurring with the aging process. (WHO, 2002).

The leading cause of death in older people world wide is vascular disease and associated chronic conditions. There exists a great potential to prevention of these diseases through, nutritious diet, and avoidance of smoking. nutrition intervention holds the promise of mitigating the growing burden of chronic disease and disability and improving the quality of life of rapidly growing older population. (Murray et al., 1997).

Governmental definition of elderly (old) age include the following categories suggested by the us census bureau (year)

67 – 74 years is “young old”

75 – 84 years is “aged”

85 – older is “oldes old”

The method of assessing the nutritional status of the geriatrics is the use of the food consumption pattern.

Aims And Objectives
