- INTRODUCTION
- 1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The Malaria eradication campaign successfully eliminated and controlled the diseases in some countries with temperate climate and in other countries where the transmission was low and moderate. However the emergence of drugs and insecticide resistance coupled with concerns about feasibility and sustainability of tackling malaria in areas with weak infrastructure and high transmission brought an end to the eradication era. This included the bulk of international funding for malaria and dissemination of malaria programme on mass media.
The radio is an important ally in any public health situation, it serves the means of being a source of correcting information as well as an advocate for correcting health behaviours. The radio broadcasts were used to train health professional to treat diseases, to prevent the deaths of infant and young from malaria.
Interpersonal communications are arguably the most utilized and effective method for spreading public health message especially in endorsing disease prevention or eradication of disease. The radio also created awareness to the government and other people to come to the aid of the people with infrastructure and fund for treatment of infected persons, there they used interpersonal communication to organise seminars and talks show where the people are being educated on everything they need to know about the disease and how to prevent it from reoccurring.
Nevertheless in Nigeria, this disease affected more people because they lack knowledge on the cause and prevention of the disease. The rate of the disease drew the attention of the media who noticed that many people contact the disease out of ignorance and lack of social amenities, the media use radio because of its characteristics of breaking all language barriers, cheaper to afford and wide reach to tell the people precautionary measures to take so as not to contact this disease.
